{"id":56603,"date":"2023-08-22T22:30:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-22T22:30:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sports.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2023\/08\/22\/its-not-going-to-change-the-game-legends-blunt-truth-about-matildas-mania\/"},"modified":"2023-08-22T22:30:00","modified_gmt":"2023-08-22T22:30:00","slug":"its-not-going-to-change-the-game-legends-blunt-truth-about-matildas-mania","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sports.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2023\/08\/22\/its-not-going-to-change-the-game-legends-blunt-truth-about-matildas-mania\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018It\u2019s not going to change the game\u2019: Legend\u2019s blunt truth about Matildas mania"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Australia was rightfully swept up in Matildas mania over the last month as the Women\u2019s World Cup broke all kinds of records.<\/p>\n<p>The 2023 Women\u2019s World Cup, which was co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, had both nations turning out in force to support their teams.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/sport\/football\/fifa-womens-world-cup-a-resounding-success-that-attracted-almost-two-million-fans-to-games\/news-story\/1974af96e01ad1ad8afc00916355431e\" title=\"www.news.com.au\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">ticket sales exceeded expectations <\/a>by almost 500,000 and the tournament generated more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/sport\/football\/world-cup\/fifa-world-cup-generated-close-to-900-million-in-revenue\/news-story\/660fe3c6622b17a34ac65aae2431c99d\" title=\"www.news.com.au\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">$A888m to break even for the first time<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s not even talking about the record viewership, including 11.15m who tuned in to watch the semi-final between the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/sport\/football\/matildas-crush-tv-ratings-records-despite-world-cup-heartbreak-in-semifinal-loss\/news-story\/57420587a41150295d6acc3ec051a899\" title=\"www.news.com.au\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"> Matildas and England<\/a>, the highest rating TV program since 2001 when OzTAM records started being kept.<\/p>\n<p>Even the Matildas third-place playoff against Sweden and the final between Spain and England had more than two million viewers each across the country.<\/p>\n<p>The tournament was an unmitigated success and many pundits said the game had been changed for the better.<\/p>\n<p>But speaking on Fox Sports\u2019 <i>The Back Page<\/i>, former Socceroo Robbie Slater said a lot more work is still to be done.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a marvellous event. The whole thing, everyone played their part, and the Matildas brought so much joy to so many young players and young people who had never really been involved in the game, so fair play to them,\u201d Slater said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut it\u2019s not going to change the game in this country. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe game needs a lot of work.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"sc-11i7hbm-0 eUyOEq\"><amp-img alt=\"Robbie Slater on the Back Page. Photo: Fox Sports<\/span><span>Source: FOX SPORTS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Candice Warner interjected and said she believed the Matildas\u2019 run at the World Cup had inspired young girls and boys to take up the game.<\/p>\n<p>Slater said they had but he still felt the game had a long way to go in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve talked so much on radio and so much media where people have said \u2018this is going to change football in this country\u2019 \u2026 I\u2019ve been around as a player, I\u2019ve been in media for far too long, I\u2019ve heard it before,\u201d Slater continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhether it was Maradona in \u201893, whether it was us making the World Cup in 2006, John Aloisi\u2019s penalty \u2014 it was a party. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve got to stop in this nation having a party for football, because when the party\u2019s over, everybody goes home. All the politicians were there and all this and all that, and great, they\u2019ve given a grant for women\u2019s sport \u2014 I think that\u2019s brilliant.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut I\u2019ll tell you what needs help, I would like some government money going to A-League Women\u2019s for example. That\u2019s where the Matildas were born. All those players came from A-League Women\u2019s.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cgovernment money\u201d Slater was speaking about was the $200m government commitment to equipment and changing rooms, however, it appears it\u2019s for all women\u2019s sports.<\/p>\n<p>In announcing the fund, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.news.com.au\/sport\/football\/world-cup\/matildas-inspire-200m-government-commitment-to-equipment-changing-rooms\/news-story\/04f93253af9b8bf5e1ccff0c9d498c36\" title=\"www.news.com.au\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Prime Minister Anthony Albanese <\/a>said the Matildas, alongside the Diamonds and the Wallaroos had captured the nation\u2019s hearts and \u201cchanged Australian sport forever\u201d, and that momentum must \u201cripple through generations\u201d.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"sc-11i7hbm-0 eUyOEq\"><amp-img alt=\"Fans turned out in droves for the Matildas. Pics Adam Head<\/span><span>Source: News Corp Australia<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>However, coming on the back of the Matildas\u2019 success, football fans were calling for more funding, considering football is consistently the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.roymorgan.com\/findings\/9278-australian-sports-participation-rates-among-children-and-adults-march-2023\" title=\"www.roymorgan.com\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">most widely played team sport <\/a>in Australia.<\/p>\n<p>Sydney Morning Herald football reporter Vince Rugari tweeted: \u201cThere are no valid arguments to not increase funding to football. Already there is a national shortage of facilities to cater for grassroots demand, in particular female-friendly change rooms \u2014 and that\u2019s before we even consider the WWC participation boom or high performance asks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The following day, after the prime minister announced the funding, Rugari said: \u201cOther sports ask for funding and they get it. Football asks for funding and other sports get it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He also clarified: \u201cTo be clear \u2013 and I think this is very obvious, but anyway, seems like some people need to hear it \u2013 nobody is against \u2018women\u2019s sport\u2019 overall receiving more funding. Literally nobody. But there\u2019s a historic imbalance re: football that needs to be addressed, and now\u2019s the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Slater said he had tipped the Matildas to win the tournament and added they played exceptionally throughout.<\/p>\n<p>He said he believed the Australians were \u201cgood enough to win it\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>However, he said the France game \u201ctook a lot out of us\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019ve never made a semi-final before but I just think they could have done better,\u201d Slater said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf Sam (Kerr) didn\u2019t get injured, who knows. Photo by Cameron Spencer\/Getty Images<\/span><span>Source: Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He also said that he now believed that coach Tony Gustavsson could have kept the same formula at the end of the tournament which would have meant Kerr coming off the bench.<\/p>\n<p>After the loss to Sweden in the bronze medal match, Kerr said: \u201cIt\u2019s been a dream come true.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe way the fans have got behind us, the way the girls have carried themselves \u2013 we\u2019ve proven to the world but also within Australia that we are a footballing nation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s all down to the fans. We couldn\u2019t get it done, but hopefully we\u2019ve inspired people for many years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Midfield star Katrina Gorry added after the semi-final loss to England: \u201cI now truly believe we are a footballing country. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery nation that\u2019s been here, not just us, everyone has felt it. Everyone has seen it. Football in Australia is going to change forever now.
