Spanish football star Jennifer Hermoso has called on the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to discipline president Luis Rubiales after his unsolicited kiss on the player\u2019s lips after the Women\u2019s World Cup final in Sydney.<\/a><\/p>\n

After her team beat England in the final on Sunday<\/a>, Hermoso walked up to shake the hand of 46-year-old Rubiales as she received her winner\u2019s medal \u2013 only for the RFEF chief to grab and kiss her unprompted.<\/p>\n

Rubiales, 46, initially attacked his critics before eventually apologising but the criticism of his behaviour has not abated.<\/p>\n

He was also filmed grabbing his crotch in a lewd gesture moments after the final whistle.<\/p>\n

In a statement released jointly by Futpro (a union for Spanish women\u2019s football) and her agency TMJ, Hermoso said: \u201cMy union, in coordination with my agency, are taking care of defending my interests and have taken over as my interlocutors on this matter.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are working to ensure that acts such as those we have seen never go unpunished, that they are sanctioned and that the exemplary measures are adopted to protect women footballers from actions that we believe are unacceptable.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Spanish government on Wednesday demanded transparency and urgent action from the country\u2019s football federation.<\/p>\n

The global players\u2019 union Fifpro also said on Wednesday that it wants FIFA\u2019s ethics committee to investigate Rubiales. Fifpro said it is \u201ccalling for immediate action to address the conduct of Luis Rubiales\u201d.<\/p>\n

It added it was: \u201cRequesting an investigation of his actions under Fifa\u2019s code of ethics. Uninitiated and uninvited physical approaches towards players are not appropriate or acceptable in any context, and especially not when they are put in a position of vulnerability by a person who holds a position of power over them in their workplace.\u201d<\/p>\n

The RFEF on Tuesday called an emergency meeting for Friday and activated an internal investigation into the incident, amid mounting pressure to take action against Rubiales.<\/p>\n

Victor Francos, Spain\u2019s secretary of sport and president of the country\u2019s sports council (CSD), said the council would take action if the RFEF did not \u2014 they can raise the case to Spain\u2019s Administrative Court for Sports.<\/p>\n

\u201cI imagine that what the responsible people will do is talk to the two parties involved and issue a report,\u201d Francos told radio station Cadena Ser.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have personally told the federation this report has to be transparent and urgent, because, if it is not, obviously we are obliged to take the corresponding additional measures.\u201d Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said Tuesday that Rubiales\u2019 apology for the kiss was insufficient.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe government has said what it has said \u2014 it is an unacceptable act, more steps (are happening) and we will use our instruments to prove transparency in the process and the corresponding resolution, if the time comes,\u201d added Francos.<\/p>\n

Rubiales has come under fire across the world and at home in Spain, with some Spanish clubs calling for him to step down.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat Rubiales has to do is resign, his behaviour has been deplorable,\u201d said Getafe\u2019s president Angel Torres on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe cannot continue for a minute more as president of the federation,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

American forward Megan Rapinoe, the world\u2019s highest-profile women\u2019s player, was similarly scathing in an interview with The Atlantic on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat kind of upside-down world are we in? On the biggest stage, where you should be celebrating, Jenni has to be physically assaulted by this guy,\u201d said Rapinoe.<\/p>\n

She referred to Rubiales\u2019 behaviour at the final as portraying \u201ca deep level of misogyny and sexism\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe has harassed and, without any doubt, assaulted a woman,\u201d Yolanda Diaz, Second Deputy Prime Minister and leader of political party Sumar, said on Tuesday, adding that Rubiales should resign.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe (sports council) must act so that machismo does not go unpunished,\u201d added Diaz on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, on Tuesday, adding that Sumar had reported Rubiales to the body.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
