(Photo by Noemi Llamas\/Eurasia Sport Images\/Getty Images)<\/span><span>Source: Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In late August, Vilda, 42, had applauded Rubiales\u2019 speech to the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) where the president had defended his actions.<\/p>\n<p>Rubiales in turn called him the best coach in women\u2019s football and offered Vilda new four-year contract worth $840,000.<\/p>\n<p>Days later, Vilda backtracked on his praise and criticised Rubiales \u2013 but did not call for him to step down. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"sc-11i7hbm-0 eUyOEq\"><amp-img alt=\"Spain's former head coach Jorge Vilda. (Photo by FRANCK FIFE \/ AFP)<\/span><span>Source: AFP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><b>\u2018Deepest regret\u2019<\/b><\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, the RFEF announced Vilda would be let go. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cthe Reef wants to convey to the whole of society and to the whole of world football its deepest regret for what has happened, which has tarnished our national team, our football and our society,\u201d the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe damage caused to Spanish football, to Spanish sport, to Spanish society and to the values of football and sport as a whole has been enormous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe coach was key to the notable growth of women\u2019s football and leaves Spain as world champions and second in the FIFA rankings,\u201d it said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Royal Spanish Football Federation, in one of the first measures of restructuring announced by (interim) President Pedro Rocha, has decided to let go of the services of Jorge Vilda as sporting director and women\u2019s national team coach, the latter of which he took on in 2015.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"sc-11i7hbm-0 eUyOEq\"><amp-img alt=\"Jorge Vilda\u2019s sacking comes just weeks after he helped Spain secure World Cup glory. (Photo by FRANCK FIFE \/ AFP)<\/span><span>Source: AFP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cRFEF appreciates his work at the head of the national team and his responsibilities as the maximum sporting figure of the women\u2019s national teams, as well as the successes reaped during his term, crowned with the recent achievement of the World Cup.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/soccer\/story\/_\/id\/38283613\/vilda-fired-spain-boss-rubiales-unsolicited-kiss-fallout-source\" title=\"www.espn.com\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">sports network ESPN<\/a>, Vilda was informed shortly after the RFEF released the statement. <\/p>\n<p>Later on Tuesday, the body said Montse Tome would take over as coach, the first woman to coach the Spanish women\u2019s team. She had been Vilda\u2019s deputy since 2018.<\/p>\n<p>FIFA and the RFEF have called on Rubiales to stand down. <\/p>\n<p>Rubiales has apologised for his conduct but has refused to quit his role and has said the kiss was consensual.
