{"id":6303,"date":"2023-01-05T11:52:53","date_gmt":"2023-01-05T11:52:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/sports.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2023\/01\/05\/tottenham-told-to-pay-66m-for-sporting-duo-with-levy-reluctant-to-back-conte-in-january\/"},"modified":"2023-01-05T11:52:53","modified_gmt":"2023-01-05T11:52:53","slug":"tottenham-told-to-pay-66m-for-sporting-duo-with-levy-reluctant-to-back-conte-in-january","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sports.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2023\/01\/05\/tottenham-told-to-pay-66m-for-sporting-duo-with-levy-reluctant-to-back-conte-in-january\/","title":{"rendered":"Tottenham told to pay \u00a366m for Sporting duo with Levy reluctant to back Conte in January"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div><!-- Article Start --><\/p>\n<p>Tottenham are interested in completing the signings of Sporting duo Marcus Edwards and Pedro Porro, according to reports in Portugal.<\/p>\n<p>Edwards came through the Tottenham youth academy before completing a permanent transfer to Vitoria Guimaraes in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>The 24-year-old impressed in the Portuguese top flight and joined Sporting for \u20ac7.5million in January 2022.<\/p>\n<p>His form for Vitoria continued over to the Jose Alvalade Stadium, where he has shone for Sporting domestically and on the European stage.<\/p>\n<p>In 39 matches for the Lisbon outfit, Edwards has 12 goals and 12 assists, including four goal contributions in this season\u2019s Champions League.<\/p>\n<p>When the winger joined Vitoria on a free transfer, Tottenham included a 50% sell-on clause in the deal.<\/p>\n<p>He has a \u20ac60m release clause with Sporting and the clause apparently still stands, meaning if the Premier League side wish to re-sign Edwards, they would only have to pay \u20ac30m.<\/p>\n<p>Edwards is not the only Lisbon player Spurs are reportedly interested in signing.<\/p>\n<p>The Premier League club are in dire need of new signings this month and improving the right-wing-back position seems to be one of Antonio Conte\u2019s priorities.<\/p>\n<p>Matt Doherty has recently established himself as Conte\u2019s first choice in that position, with Djed Spence out in the cold and Emerson Royal picking up minutes off the bench.<\/p>\n<p>Spurs\u2019 pursuit of Porro recently hit a stumbling block with Sporting telling the north Londoners to pay the Spaniard\u2019s \u00a340m release clause.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.football365.com\/news\/spurs-fans-conte-right-to-be-annoyed-stingy-levy-refuses-to-pay-release-clause-pedro-porro\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Conte\u2019s side are not willing to do so<\/strong><\/a>, however, in classic Daniel Levy fashion.<\/p>\n<p>While Spurs could do with another central defender, perhaps even a new winger, attacking midfielder and goalkeeper as well, their right-wing-back options are cause for concern, and it would be in Levy\u2019s best interests to fork out the \u00a340m to sign Porro.<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.record.pt\/futebol\/futebol-nacional\/liga-bwin\/sporting\/detalhe\/75-milhoes-ou-nada-por-porro-e-edwards\" target=\"_blank\">According to Portuguese newspaper <em>Record,<\/em> there is also no room for negotiation in a deal to sign Edwards.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>As mentioned prior, Edwards has a\u00a0\u20ac60m (\u00a352m) release clause but Spurs would only have to pay half that amount, while Porro\u2019s is \u20ac45m (\u00a340m).<\/p>\n<p>Sporting will only sell for these prices, meaning Spurs would have to cough up \u00a366m to land the two right-sided players.<\/p>\n<p>Given Levy\u2019s track record, it is hard to envision him paying that, although the fact Edwards is available for a very respectable price could tempt him, even if signing a player in his position is not completely necessary.<\/p>\n<p>Having played against Spurs twice in the Champions League this term, club captain Hugo Lloris tipped Edwards to have a big future in the game.<\/p>\n<p>Lloris said in September following his side\u2019s 2-0 loss in Portugal:\u00a0\u201cYeah [he\u2019s blossomed]. He\u2019s more mature. He\u2019s 23 years old now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was the same quality that we could see a few years ago when he trained with the first team.
