Socceroos boss Graham Arnold has revealed the comment that inspired the Aussies to a famous 3-1 win over England in 2003 as he looks to lead his side to yet another upset.<\/p>\n

Australia and England last met in May 2016 where the latter took home the spoils in a 2-1 victory at the Stadium of Light, Sunderland\u2019s home ground.<\/p>\n

But it is the Aussies\u2019 all-time upset back 20 years ago that stands out as the biggest result between the two proud nations.<\/p>\n

However, as Arnold told <\/a>The Times<\/a><\/i>, <\/a>the 3-1 win perhaps shouldn\u2019t have come as a surprise given how fired up the Socceroos were after then-England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson\u2019s pre-match comments.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember reading the newspaper the day before, where Sven came out and said \u2018I\u2019m going to change the whole team at halftime\u2019,\u201d Arnold, who was Frank Farina\u2019s assistant at the time, said. <\/p>\n

\u201cThat p*ssed our players off. \u2018Who the hell does he think he is? Does he think we\u2019re s***?\u2019 We grew the narrative as coaches, \u2018look, they have no respect for us.\u2019 The Aussie mentality kicked in.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had some top players. Our Golden Generation. You look back at that generation, you didn\u2019t have to motivate them too much. Harry [Kewell] was quiet but he had this incredibly strong mentality. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere was no way we were going to lose that game, especially the mentality of Viduka and these guys.\u201d<\/p>\n

As it transpired, Farina\u2019s side led 2-0 at half time thanks to goals from Tony Popovic and Harry Kewell.<\/p>\n

The deficit sparked a furious response from an English superstar, proving the Three Lions had well and truly been rattled by their rivals.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe walked up the tunnel and all you could hear was [David] Beckham going to Sven, \u2018we\u2019re not f*cking coming off. We can\u2019t be down to 2-0 at halftime and come off,\u2019\u201d Arnold said.<\/p>\n

\u201cSven still changed the whole team.\u201d <\/p>\n

Although Australia\u2019s lead was cut in half thanks to Francis Jeffers, Brett Emerton\u2019s late goal sealed the win.<\/p>\n

Both England and Australia have endured their respective peaks and troughs in the 20 years that have followed.<\/p>\n

However, the two nations will collide on Saturday at Wembley having enjoyed strong success in recent years: England made it to the final of Euro 2020 while Arnold led the Socceroos to the Round of 16 at the 2022 World Cup before being dumped out by eventual champions Argentina.<\/p>\n

Arnold is certainly relishing the chance to pit his managerial wit against Gareth Southgate, but it\u2019s the chance for his players to showcase their talents against a powerhouse that has the Aussie boss extremely excited.<\/p>\n

\u201cGareth\u2019s got some marvellous players \u2014 Jude Bellingham\u2019s incredible \u2014 but what better way to show the world individually what we can do than playing against these type of players at Wembley,\u201d Arnold said<\/p>\n

\u201cThe whole of Australia will be watching. Our biggest sporting rivalry is England because of the history. The whole of England will be watching. <\/p>\n

\u201cThere might be a bit of payback from the cricket!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
