“Really focusing on all the positives”: Hayley Scamurra gives her honest opinion on Donald Trump’s controversial comment about women’s hockey team

Team USA women’s hockey forward Hayley Scamurra shared her honest opinion on President Donald Trump’s controversial comments about the women’s hockey team during a recent interview.

Team USA achieved a historic sweep at the 2026 Winter Olympics, with both the men’s and women’s teams clinching gold medals in identical 2-1 overtime victories against Canada in their respective finals.

The teams received widespread praise for their dominant performances, which quickly became controversial after FBI Director Kash Patel called President Donald Trump and put him on speakerphone to speak directly with the men’s team in the locker room.

During the call, Trump congratulated the players, invited them to the White House, and to attend his State of the Union address, and joked about the need to extend the invitation to the women’s team as well:

“I do believe that I would probably be impeached [if the women’s team was not invited],” Trump said.

The comment drew criticism and laughter from the men’s team, sparking debate online about whether it downplayed the women’s achievement.

In a recent interview on The Hockey Lifers podcast with Jeff Marek and Bruce Boudreau, Hayley Scamurra shared her thoughts on the call:

“The call was what it was. The outpouring of love and support we’ve kind of received since that has outweighed any other feelings that I have. I’m really just focusing on all the positives we’ve had. So many people reach out in support of us and wanting to do anything they can to kind of show that support,” Scamurra said.

    She added:

“I just want to focus on how great our team is and how dominant we were the whole tournament. We got double gold, like men’s and women’s side, that is so incredible, and I want to celebrate that, and I don’t want that to be overshadowed.

Ellan Hughes shares her thoughts about President Donald Trump’s controversy with the US women’s hockey team

Ellen Hughes, the mother of USA golden goal hero Jack Hughes, recently shared her thoughts on a controversy involving President Donald Trump.

She emphasized unity over politics, saying:

“At the end of the day, it’s just about the country… That’s all the men’s team and women’s team care about. If you could see what we see from the inside, and the men and women sharing dorm rooms and halls and flex floors and the camaraderie and the way the women cheered on the men and the way the men cheered on the women— that’s what it’s all about,” she said.”

Meanwhile, Donald Trump said during his Tuesday State of the Union address that the U.S. women’s hockey team will “soon be coming to the White House” to celebrate their gold medal win.
