The New Jersey Devils are at a critical crossroads following the dismissal of Tom Fitzgerald just days ago and NHL insider Chris Johnston has identified the most pressing issue facing whoever takes over the vacant position.
Speaking on The Chris Johnston Show this week, Johnston outlined the immediate dilemma awaiting New Jersey’s next decision-maker, stressing that clarity around captain Nico Hischier must come before anything else.
“Probably the first order of business…for the new leader in New Jersey…is Nico Hischier open to an extension; either get that done or you’re trading him; I don’t imagine they would go into a lame duck year with him,” Johnston said.
The Devils’ captain and first-overall pick from the 2017 draft is entering the final year of his seven-year, $50.75 million contract that carries a $7.25 million cap hit. The 27-year-old Swiss center will become eligible to sign an extension on July 1 and will hit unrestricted free agency in the summer of 2027 if no deal is reached.
His modified 10-team no-trade clause further complicates matters, giving him significant influence over any potential move. If an extension isn’t feasible or if Hischier is hesitant to commit, the Devils may be forced to explore a trade rather than risk losing their captain for nothing.
Nico Hischier non-committal about future with the Devils
When Hischier was asked directly about his future with the organization after Tom Fotzgeralds dismissal, the captain struck a measured tone.
Hischier chose his words carefully keeping the focus on the present and did not offer any guarantees about what lies ahead.
“I’m focusing on playing hockey here,” Hischier said Tuesday. “I still have one more year. So I’m with the Devils right now and then we’ll see what happens.”
The Devils entered the 2025-26 season with legitimate Stanley Cup aspirations but were officially eliminated from playoff contention on April 8. Hischier has remained productive despite the team’s struggles, recording 26 goals and 62 points through 79 games this season. Over his career, he has totaled 197 goals and 484 points in 606 games while consistently taking on top defensive assignments.
The Devils have already begun its search for a new general manager with candidates such as Sunny Mehta, Tyler Dellow, Jason Spezza, Jaime Langenbrunner and John Chayka all linked to the role. There is also speculation that Brendan Shanahan could be considered for a president of hockey operations position above the GM.
