Real Madrid learn compensation fee needed to hire Jose Mourinho: Reports

Real Madrid have hit a slight stumbling block in their pursuit to bring Jose Mourinho back to the club. Los Blancos will be asked to pay a compensation fee to bring the Portuguese manager back to the Madrid-based club.

According to Record, the Merengue club would have to pay a compensation fee of nearly €7 million to Benfica to bring the legendary manager back to the Bernabeu. The fee is a value that was agreed upon between Mourinho and Benfica when he signed a deal with the club.

This clause is active only within a specific time frame; the fee must reportedly be paid within 10 days after the final Portuguese League game of the season if either party decides to terminate the current contract.

Benfica are not ready to allow Mourinho to leave and join Los Blancos, as they have reportedly presented a new contract offer to the legendary Portuguese gaffer. Despite interest from Madrid, the Eagles believe that the new contract terms could convince the 63-year-old tactician to stay at the club and snub the offer from Los Blancos.

Real Madrid president, Florentino Perez, recently gave an interview to Spanish journalist Josep Pedrerol, where he discussed the state of affairs at the club. He was asked about Mourinho’s impact at the club during his first stint, Perez said (via Yahoo Sports):

“Do I like Mourinho? I like all managers. He was with us, he raised our competitiveness, and then we won several Champions Leagues in a row.”

When asked directly if the club is in talks to hire him, he said:

“You’re really harping on about Mourinho. I didn’t even speak to Mourinho when he came here for the Champions League match against Benfica.”

Real Madrid are second behind LaLiga winners Barcelona and will finish the season without any trophies. They will hope the potential arrival of Mourinho will change the fortunes of the club.

Jose Mourinho addresses rumors linking him with Real Madrid move

Jose Mourinho has been heavily linked with a return to Madrid. Speaking after a draw against Braga in his post-match press conference, he said (via The Independent):

“You’re talking about Real Madrid, I’m not talking about Real Madrid. I’m talking about Benfica, and the work we’ve been doing won’t change because we’re second or third. That’s not what’s going to influence my future.

“Obviously, Benfica wants to play in the Champions League, and so do I as a coach, but it has no influence whatsoever.”
