Andoni Iraola pledges to embrace Liverpool‘s identity and play fast, attacking football of the kind that came to be synonymous with Jurgen Klopp’s long and victorious Anfield reign.
It’s worth noting that Iraola is not Klopp, and his tactical approach differs from the German’s gegenpressing. The former Bournemouth boss might play to the tune of “rock and roll” on the pitch, but that’s a different genre to heavy metal.
However, a certainty is that Liverpool will step away from the measured possession employed by Arne Slot, a system that worked so well during the title-winning 2024/25 campaign but became stale and laboured this season, resulting in what can only be described as a dismal Premier League title defence.

Slot’s dismissal was unsurprising, save for the repeated message from the FSG offices that he had their backing. In the end, the rot had spread too far, and change was needed.
Liverpool make offer to Mohamed Salah replacement
Change was needed, but the departure of club legend Mohamed Salah has still been as sad as it gets for Liverpool. He has been the definitive superstar of this halcyon period, and it goes without saying that replacing him will be difficult.
FSG’s job has been made trickier still by the need for reinforcements across a range of positions. Ibrahima Konate is joining Real Madrid at the end of his contract, and surely Liverpool’s spluttering midfield needs redress?
It’s not only Salah who needs replacing up top. Hugo Ekitike is in rehabilitation after rupturing his Achilles heel in April; he faces a race to return before the end of the calendar year.
According to football’s resident transfer reporter, Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool have thus far offered the best salary to Yan Diomande, who RB Leipzig are adamant will not be sold this summer.
Even so, Liverpool have made formal contact with the Bundesliga outfit, who expect a nine-digit figure if they are to part with the 19-year-old this summer.
Talks are very much on for a player who, in a roundabout way, could emerge as Iraola’s own version of Bobby Firmino.
Why Diomande can be Liverpool’s new Firmino
Firmino was a one-of-a-kind player for Liverpool, the glue that held together Klopp’s world-class attack. Salah and Sadio Mane often took the plaudits, but as Klopp once poetically put it, the Brazilian “played 12 instruments in our orchestra“.
Now, albeit in a different fashion, Diomande could be something similar for Iraola’s Liverpool, emerging as the rhythmic accompaniment Alexander Isak needs to start firing from number nine.
Described as a “generational talent” by journalist Bence Bocsák, Diomande has just emerged from his first season as a first-team regular, joining Leipzig from Leganaes and taking the Bundesliga by storm.
Diomande has “incredible defensive numbers“, according to statistician Pythagoras in Boots, his tenacity and commitment underpinning his potency in the final third and his creativity.
In regard to how he compares with Salah this season, it’s without question that Diomande would prove an upgrade, more robust and fresh than the 33-year-old, who sadly has slipped from his remarkable standards.

Salah’s creativity remained intact, but he lacked the fluency and style of before. In this, Diomande could not only replace him, but bring a certain Firmino-esque elegance to the table.
Bobby Dazzler, as he is affectionately known on Merseyside, threaded Klopp’s attack together, and now, Diomande could do the same, supplying Isak and Ekitike (when he returns to fitness), and allowing Liverpool to explore their title credentials once again.
Whether Liverpool will hit their peak under Iraola next season remains to be seen, but there’s no question that their chances of doing so will triple with a winger like Diomande playing down the right wing.
He is the real deal, someone who incorporates a myriad of different attributes from Liverpool’s attacking superstars over the years. He might be a touch pricey, but Liverpool would get bang for their buck.
