The Washington Wizards selected former BYU star AJ Dybantsa with the No. 1 pick in the 2026 NBA draft on Tuesday. Dybantsa defeated fellow freshman Darryn Peterson, who was taken at the No. 2 pick by Utah, to become the top selection of this year’s draft.

Dybantsa becomes only the third No.1 selection in Wizards history since the NBA changed draft formats to eliminate territorial picks in 1966. While the Big 12 Freshman of the Year was the top selection on Tuesday, Cameron Boozer, the 2026 college player of the year for Duke, was selected at No. 3 by Memphis.
Daniels, who entered the league on the back of his Heisman Trophy win in 2023, made a strong impression in his rookie season in 2024 and was named the NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year. However, the Commanders quarterback struggled with injuries last season, managing just seven starts.
