It’s gameday: Previewing CanMNT vs. South Africa in the Round of 32 | The GIST

    🇨🇦 CanMNT

The GIST: CanMNT controlled their own fate but couldn’t win Group B after a disappointing final group stage showing in Vancouver on Wednesday, a loss that cost them the chance to play a fourth consecutive match (and their first-ever knockout game) on Canadian soil.

    • It was tough…but it might’ve been a necessary kick in the pants.

🤦 Canada started slow in 2–1 loss to Switzerland: In stark contrast to their 6–0 thrashing of Qatar, Canada languished through the first half against the dominant Swiss. Head coach (HC) Jesse Marsch responded with multiple halftime subs, which brought renewed energy to Canada’s game, but the Swiss scored two quick goals, dampening the Vancouver vibes.

    • Les Rouges finally ignited after the last hydration break: Super sub Promise David nailed a 76th minute banger with his first touch of the game, fulfilling his promise to score in Vancouver.

👀 Would we have loved a win or draw? Of course — but Canada learned a valuable lesson: There’s no time to waste in a WC match. Here’s who we expect to set the tempo today:

    • 🔴 Promise David | Striker: A David plus fellow striker Jonathan David (no relation) pairing is just what Canada needs to start this game on the right…foot.
    • Alphonso Davies | Defender: Is this wishful thinking considering Davies hasn’t played yet? More on that below, but if anyone can shift the vibes merely by being on the pitch, it’s Davies, a generational talent and sorely missing piece of Canada’s puzzle.

❓ So what’s up with Alphonso Davies?

ICYMI, international superstar Davies entered the tourney with a hamstring injury. The timeline surrounding his return has been murky, with the defender available off the bench for the last two games but not taking the field.

    • Marsch admitted after the loss to Switzerland that declaring Davies fit for that game was a decoy tactic, but that he’s “ready for the next match” in LA. Sure, Jan Jesse.

Davies’ WC presence has been strange, neither a leader on the field nor a vocal one off it (the captain ignored the media after the Switzerland loss). If he is fit to play — and that’s a big if — he’s the gamechanger Canada needs. Only time will tell how his 2026 WC story ends…err, begins.

    🇿🇦 South Africa

The GIST: It’s been an up-and-down tourney for South Africa, who upset Korea Republic 1–0 on Wednesday to clinch second place in Group A. Here’s what you need to know about Bafana Bafana.

😱 South Africa is also playing in their first-ever men’s knockout game: Prior to Wednesday’s win, South Africa’s biggest soccer moment was hosting the 2010 World Cup — you know, the “Waka Waka” one. Like Canada, this is their first WC elimination game, though unlike CanMNT, their group stage play didn’t exactly inspire confidence.

    • Bafana Bafana lost 2–0 to Mexico and tied Czechia 1–1 before stunning Korea Republic, who had elected not to start their captain in the first half. South Africa’s gameplay has been inconsistent, making it hard to predict what kind of team will take the field today.

👀 Here’s what we do know — the following players can cause issues for Canada:

    • 🟢 Thapelo Maseko | Winger: Maseko scored the most important goal of his career against Korea, sending South African soccer to new heights. He’s met the moment once before and would certainly love to do it again.
    • 🟡 Teboho Mokoena | Defensive midfielder: Mokoena missed the Korea win with a yellow card suspension, but he’ll be back on the pitch today, dictating South Africa’s pace.

    🔑 CanMNT’s keys to success

🤔 Looking back, the Switzerland game wasn’t the first time this tourney Canada properly adjusted and showed more aggression in the second half: CanMNT fell behind in their WC opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina but responded with a 78th-minute Cyle Larin goal for a 1–1 draw.

    • HC Marsch is encouraging Les Rouges to play relentless, energetic football because that’s when Canada has been at its best — but that style of play isn’t necessarily sustainable for 90 minutes.
    • Perhaps that explains why inexperienced Canada has started slowly in two of three games thus far, reverting to their typical defensive style.

⚡ In order to defeat South Africa today, Canada needs to channel their bravado from the get-go, pairing its zingiest players like Promise David and Saliba on the starting lineup along with, dare we say, Davies. No more Mr. Nice Defensive CanMNT — time to be brash and confident.
