The NWSL has developed a reputation for being inclusive and supportive of all communities. Whether it be BIPOC, LGBTQ+, or people with disabilities, people from any and all backgrounds are welcomed in the NWSL. Here we will take a look at how some of the players and teams in the NWSL recognize Disability Pride Month.
Carson Pickett
First off, Carson Pickett is not only a stellar defender for the Denver Summit, but she has proven to be an outstanding activist for the disability community. She is an influential activist for limb difference awareness and demonstrates that the game of soccer welcomes all who work hard despite any obstacles that may be faced along the way. Beyond the NWSL pitch, Pickett has also performed for the USWNT. She was the first USWNT player with a limb difference disability to hit the pitch in 2022.
She is a key partner of the Hand Camp Colorado, which aims to support and uplift children born with upper extremity differences. As she travels around with the Summit squad, Pickett enjoys meeting with fans who experience limb-different disabilities as well. Pickett is a nominee for the 2026 Lauren Holiday Impact Award for her community service.
Washington Spirit
The Spirit have made their stadiums more inclusive with accessibility features such as mobility services, a sensory room, and sensory bags filled with fidget toys and noise-cancelling headphones. Aside from this, the Spirit provides ASL services throughout their matches.
Longtime veteran goalkeeper, now Spirit Assistant Goalkeeper Coach, Nicole Barnhart collaborates with the Spirit merchandise by promoting the “LOVE” apparel line. Shirts that include ASL motifs are included in the line, along with other sorts of inclusive phrases and symbolism. From this, the club donates 10% of its income from the “LOVE” apparel to the So Kids SOAR organization that promotes athletic services for kids with disabilities.
Angel City FC
Recently, ACFC partnered with Easterseals Disability Services in order to provide a more accessible and inclusive environment for all fans. Not only will the club provide ASL interpreters for matchdays, but the club will also train the staff in disability inclusion and preparation.
This step is definitely inspired by that of the Washington Spirit, so it is a wonderful thing to witness in the league and, hopefully, more clubs begin taking initiative in creating a more comfortable and welcoming space for individuals with disabilities.
