The Northern Super League has announced its first expansion team for 2027 in Winnipeg. Former NWSL midfielder and Canadian Olympic gold medalist Desiree Scott is a co-founder of the new club and will serve as the Vice President, Community & Player Experience.
“It is an honor to bring professional women’s soccer of this caliber to Winnipeg and to join a trailblazing organization like the Northern Super League,” Scott said as part of the announcement Tuesday. “As a former player, I know exactly what an elite sporting environment looks like and what athletes need to succeed.”
Rob Gale, former Thorns head coach, is also a co-founder and will serve as Chief Sporting Officer.
The NSL began with the 2025 season with franchises in six Canadian cities. Winnipeg joins founding clubs in Calgary, Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, and Vancouver. The league is in the midst of its second season. Winnipeg will be the circuit’s 7th franchise.
The club’s branding, venue, and coaching staff will be announced at a later date.
