BRITISH-RECORD MOVE FOR ENGLAND’S RISING STAR

Chelsea have shattered the British transfer record, completing the blockbuster signing of England star Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa in a deal worth more than £117 million (A$223m).

The 23-year-old attacking midfielder has signed a six-year contract at Stamford Bridge, with the option of a further season, becoming the second-most expensive Premier League signing in history.

Only Alexander Isak’s £130 million move from Newcastle to Liverpool last season now ranks above the fee Chelsea have paid, with Rogers’ transfer eclipsing the previous British-record £116 million Manchester City paid Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson.

The landmark signing represents a major statement of intent from new manager Xabi Alonso as Chelsea look to rebuild after a disappointing 10th-place Premier League finish last season.

Speaking for the first time as a Chelsea player in the club’s announcement video, Rogers couldn’t hide his excitement about the move.

    “I’m so excited.

“For me, Chelsea are the biggest club in London and a club I’ve always admired since I was a kid.

“I’m really excited about the project with the new manager, the players we’ve got and where the club is heading. That’s why I’m here and I can’t wait to get started.

“I’m joining the biggest club in London.

“The way the club wants to go and how it wants to move forward, I want to be a part of. It was just perfect for me.

    “I am a free-spirit, free-flowing footballer.

“I like to take risks, make things happen, change games, whatever that might take. I can’t wait to get going.”

Rogers will link up with Chelsea following the club’s pre-season tour of Australia after representing England at the FIFA World Cup, where he featured primarily as an impact substitute before earning a start on the right wing in the Three Lions’ semi-final defeat to Argentina.

The transfer is also a financial boost for Rogers’ former club, Middlesbrough, who are set to receive around £20 million thanks to a sell-on clause negotiated when he joined Aston Villa in 2024.

Villa confirmed the move in a farewell statement.

“Aston Villa can confirm that Morgan Rogers has completed a permanent transfer to Chelsea,” it said.

“Since joining from Middlesbrough in 2024, the midfielder has enjoyed a rapid rise to prominence, helping Villa to lift the UEFA Europa League last term, scoring the third goal in the final in Istanbul.

“During his time at the club, he also earned his first senior England caps, representing his country at the FIFA World Cup 2026, where the Three Lions finished third.

“A player with impeccable behaviour and commitment, Morgan leaves Aston Villa with the best wishes of everyone at the football club for both his service to the club and for his future career.

“He will always remain a core part of our recent great moments and memories.”

Chelsea’s decision to spend a British-record fee underlines the dramatic shift in transfer strategy since Alonso’s arrival, with the club moving away from long-term projects and instead investing heavily in proven elite talent.

    BLOCKBUSTER MADRID MOVE BACK ON?

Real Madrid are reportedly reconsidering a blockbuster move for Manchester City superstar Rodri, with influential figures inside the club pushing to revive a deal for the Spanish midfielder.

The 30-year-old has long been viewed as an unlikely arrival at Real Madrid, with club president Florentino Pérez understood to favour investing in younger talent as part of the club’s long-term project.

However, according to multiple reports, that view is not unanimous. Senior members of the club’s hierarchy are continuing to push for Rodri’s signature, believing the experienced midfielder would provide an immediate boost to Real Madrid’s midfield.

Rodri has also reportedly rejected Manchester City’s attempts to extend his stay, with a return to Spain believed to be his preferred option.

Transfer expert Matteo Moretto reports that Real Madrid are now internally reassessing Rodri’s situation as they continue planning for the future.

“At Real Madrid, they are internally reconsidering Rodri’s situation,” Moretto said.

“After his stellar World Cup, a portion of the board is pressing to reach an agreement with the Spanish midfielder, who is showing himself to be completely open to returning to Spain, which has always been his priority.”

The former Ballon d’Or winner is fresh from helping Spain lift just the second World Cup in the nation’s history and remains one of the game’s premier midfielders.

While Pérez would ultimately need to approve any move, growing internal support for Rodri means the prospect of one of the summer’s biggest transfers remains very much alive.
