Customizing Mercenaries in Path of Exile Allflame League is a feature only accessible to the Luminary Ascendancy for Scion. After completing the Trail, you can start hiring them through the campaign and the endgame. However, after getting a Mercenary, you will need to decide if you want to be the damage dealer or support.
The type of Mercenary spawn will ultimately decide which type of build you play. If you’re planning to let your Mercs deal with enemies, you need to take the support role. Luckily, building for that isn’t too complicated.
How to support your Mercenary in Path of Exile
To become the best support, you’ll need to become a linked aurabot Luminary. Buffs that’ll improve the Mercenary’s survivability or improve their damage are a priority over your own damage. Here are a few things you’ll want to know:
- Flame Link is the best way to increase your Merc’s damage. The Skill provides them with additional Fire damage equal to 5% of your Maximum Life. Since you’re already stacking as much life as possible to survive the endgame, Flame Link will gain a lot of benefits. Do note that before getting the Oath of Fealty, if the Linked Merc dies, you will also go down regardless of how much HP you have.
- Haste aura provides Movement, Attack, and Cast speed to your Allies, including the Mercenary. Faster attacks equal more damage. A few other useful auras to buff the Merc are Envy, Hatred, and Anger. Since it’s difficult to have them all at once, use the one that matches the damage type your Mercenary is using.
- Improving your Merc’s damage isn’t the only way to play. Use Curses to strip enemy resistances. While the Merc is busy fighting, you can spam curses to weaken enemies.
- The Legendary Arms Notable increased your Mercenary’s damage by 8% for each Unique they have equipped. While you can’t have all passives when using Legendary Arms and Oath of Fealty, that’s still 24% additional damage from three Uniques.
- Using minions is another good idea to provide various offensive and defensive buffs. The Forest Warrior summoned using Raise Spectre grants permanent Onslaught to nearby allies, while Perfect Guardian Turtle casts Determination aura for additional armor.
- Uniques equipped by you are yet another way of improving the damage in a Mercenary build. Two good picks are Leer Cast, which grants 50% additional damage to allies, and Crown of the Tyrant, which adds various damage types based on the Socket color.
These are a few things that come to mind when thinking about support in Path of Exile. We’re sure many more things will come to light as the League progresses. But for now, these should be enough to boost your Mercenary damage to the moon for your League start.
