INEOS must sign him: How Man Utd can secure an instant upgrade on Tielemans

Manchester United have a huge campaign ahead of them throughout 2026/27, with Michael Carrick set to face the biggest test of his managerial career to date.

Whilst he only suffered two defeats in his 17 Premier League games in charge last term, the added fixture congestion due to the Champions League could prove to be a tricky balancing act.

The 45-year-old will want to be competitive on all fronts, but the extra matches on the schedule could make it challenging for the Red Devils to mount a charge for every trophy on offer.

If his side are to get their hands on a piece of silverware throughout the upcoming season, one player will likely have a key role if his pre-season form is anything to go by.

Why Tielemans is United’s best signing this summer

As part of United’s summer recruitment drive, the hierarchy have completed the £35m signing of midfielder Youri Tielemans from fellow Premier League side Aston Villa.

The deal for the Belgian came massively out of the Blue, with Carrick’s men landing a player with over 200 appearances in England’s top-flight for a bargain fee.

The 29-year-old made his first appearance for the Red Devils during Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Champions League winners PSG, subsequently coming off the bench with just 25 minutes remaining.

However, despite the limited minutes, Tielemans still managed to catch the eye and showcased to the United faithful the talents he will add to the heart of Carrick’s side.

He completed 100% of the passes he attempted, often sitting at the base of the midfield and dictating the play after his introduction in the 65th minute.

Even without the ball, the £35m summer addition managed to impress, as he made two tackles and five ball recoveries – with the latter the highest tally of any Red Devils midfielder.

It may be early days in his career in Manchester, but his recent showing during the club’s pre-season tour is evidence that he’s capable of being a key player across all competitions this term.

How United can land an instant Tielemans upgrade with £42m star

Despite the two midfield additions at Old Trafford already this summer, INEOS appear to be on the hunt to land another addition for Carrick in such a department.

The likes of Manu Kone, Aurelien Tchouameni and Eduardo Camavinga have all been touted with moves to Manchester, but for now, such deals have gone quiet.

However, the same can’t be said about Monaco star Lamine Camara, who is now appearing as a genuine transfer target for the Red Devils before the window closes.

It’s been reported by Foot Mercato that United are now considering a move for the Senegalese international after his impressive form throughout last term.

They also claim the likes of Liverpool, Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest are also keen on the 22-year-old, who could be available for a fee in the region of £42m.

It’s clear the board think the senior side is in desperate need of added depth at the heart of the side at present, with a move for Camara providing exactly that.

However, he could even arrive in Manchester as a regular starter, with his stats from the 2025/26 campaign showcasing why he’s a more well-rounded asset than Tielemans.

Camara, who’s gained a reputation for being a superb box-to-box option, managed to complete an impressive 86% pass completion rate, whilst also registering 1.7 chances created per 90.

Both of the aforementioned tallies were higher than those of the former Villa star, whilst also placing him above 90% of other players in his position across Europe.

Such numbers highlight the Senegalese international’s remarkable talent with the ball at his feet, which could make him a better dictator of the play than the £35m addition.

Even without the ball, Camara managed to dominate new signing Tielemans, subsequently winning more of his ground duels and making more tackles per 90.

Like his talent in possession, such numbers ranked him highly amongst those around him, with only 8% of midfielders on the continent managing to better him in such areas.

It’s hardly a surprise the player is in such demand after producing such figures, with journalist Zach Lowy even dubbing him “one of the best young midfielders on the market.”

£42m for a player of his calibre and potential would be a phenomenal deal for United and one which could set them up for immediate and long-term success.

It would be harsh on Tielemans to lose out in any deal, but it’s evident that Camara has a better skill set needed to thrive in Carrick’s two-man midfield in front of the backline.
