Jaissle’s a big fan: Newcastle making enquiries to sign

Newcastle United have submitted an enquiry to sign RB Leipzig midfielder Nicolas Seiwald, with new manager Matthias Jaissle regarded as a big fan.

Improving the midfield will be very important for Newcastle, as we enter the final two weeks of the summer transfer window, considering they have lost Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur and Bruno Guimaraes to Arsenal.

Following the two major departures in the middle of the park, Jaissle could perhaps do with signing a more experienced midfielder, considering a large proportion of his current options are still very young.

The Magpies boss is known to be a keen admirer of the Austrian, who he knows well, having spent time working with him at RB Salzburg.

Jaissle isn’t alone in his admiration either. During his time with RB Salzburg, the central midfielder received high praise from scout Antonio Mango, who said: “Swear if he was French or Spanish, people would be raving about him. Don’t sleep on him, he’s been sensational this season. Hidden Gem.”

Since leaving his home country, the 25-year-old has gone on to become a key player for RB Leipzig, making 84 Bundesliga appearances across the past three seasons, and his stellar defensive attributes have been on full display.

Last season, the 51-cap Austria international averaged 1.9 interceptions per 90 in the Bundesliga, which was the highest number in the RB Leipzig squad, whereas an average of 2.2 tackles per 90 ranked him in joint-second place.

To put that into context, only three players averaged more interceptions per 90 in the Premier League during the 2025-26 campaign, namely Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana, Manchester City defender Abdukodir Khusanov and Manchester United’s Manuel Ugarte.

According to a report from TEAMtalk, Newcastle are now submitting enquiries to sign Seiwald, who was a key component of an RB Salzburg side that lifted the Austrian title under Jaissle.

The Magpies are determined to sign another midfielder before the September 1st deadline, and they are collecting information on the Austrian maestro, who has made 25 appearances in the Champions League.

The former RB Salzburg star is being targeted as an alternative to Marseille’s Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg, who turned down the opportunity to move to St. James’ Park, while the Magpies remain locked in negotiations to sign Joao Palhinha from Bayern Munich.

At 31-years-old, Palhinha is much older than Seiwald, but with age comes experience, and he is tried and tested in the Premier League, making 101 appearances in the competition across spells with Fulham and Tottenham Hotspur.
