“Deion Sanders will testify remotely”: Shilo Sanders trial starts on bad footing as analyst lays down stakes for Coach Prime’s son

The bankruptcy trial of Shilo Sanders opened on difficult ground on Monday as the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers safety seeks to discharge an $11.89 million civil judgment. According to reports about the case, early testimony painted a challenging picture for the defense.

At issue is whether injuries Sanders inflicted on John Darjean, a security guard at Sanders’ high school, in a 2015 incident were deliberate. Florio reports that there’s a possibility of remote testimony from Shilo’s father, Deion Sanders, before the end of the week, adding another layer to the high-stakes legal proceedings.

“Deion will testify remotely on Friday, if (and only if) Shilo’s lawyers open the door to potential testimony from Deion regarding the reason(s) for Shilo not wanting to lose access to his phone,” Florio wrote.

“The case will be decided by the presiding judge, not a jury. Which means that, in the end, the judge will have to decide whether the full scope of the evidence does or doesn’t point to ‘willful and malicious’ behavior by Shilo.”

It remains to be seen whether Coach Prime gets to give his testimony in the case, just a day after Colorado’s 2026 season opener against Georgia Tech. The Pro Football Hall of Famer has already voiced public support for Shilo Sanders in a video from the Buffaloes practice ground on Monday after the case returned to a U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Denver.

Analyst explains why the case started on a difficult ground for Shilo Sanders

Citing a recap from USA Today’s Brent Schrotenboer, Mike Florio explains why the case wasn’t going Shilo Sanders’ way in its early phase. A host of witnesses testified against the former Colorado safety, reducing his chances of breaking free from the financial obligations.

“Multiple witnesses testified via prerecorded video about the incident,” Florio wrote. One saw Shilo hit Darjean with an elbow in the throat before punching him twice. Another saw Shilo punch Darjean in the face, ‘unprovoked.’ Another said Shilo’s conduct was ‘aggressive’ and ‘volatile.’

“Shilo’s lawyers claim that he had been ‘overpowered’ by Darjean during the altercation. Obviously, they’ll need to introduce evidence that overcomes the initial witnesses presented by Darjean.”

An unfavorable outcome in the ongoing proceeding would leave Shilo Sanders facing the massive financial consequences tied to the judgment. Sanders’s failure to show up and defend himself in the personal injury trial resulted in a default judgment awarding John Darjean $11.89 million in damages.
