Manchester United and Arsenal reportedly held talks over a deal to sign Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez, as per TEAMtalk.
After coming through the Blaugrana’s famous La Masia academy, the 23-year-old made his first-team debut in 2023. Initially, he featured as a rotational option before showing glimpses of his qualities last term.
In 48 appearances across all competitions, Lopez scored 13 goals and registered 17 assists. This season, he has made six goal contributions in seven appearances. The youngster has won two La Liga titles and a few domestic cup competitions in recent years.
Although he failed to secure his place in Spain’s World Cup squad due to an injury problem this summer, he has regained his place in Luis De La Fuente’s team for this September/October international fixtures.
Now, TEAMtalk claim that after being impressed by Lopez’s recent eye-catching performances, Man Utd and Arsenal expressed their interest in signing him.
Intermediaries believed the midfielder could have been available this summer; therefore, the Red Devils and the Gunners held talks over a potential swoop.
Moreover, Chelsea made contact over a deal. But Barcelona refused to let him leave, while Lopez didn’t want to leave his boyhood club, with his existing deal set to run until 2031.
Battle
Lopez is a creative midfielder by trait but is comfortable in the box-to-box role. Moreover, he can provide cover on the flanks if needed. López is technically sound, can create opportunities for the attackers, and is efficient in finishing off his chances.
Moreover, he has an eye for long-range passing, can score goals from distance, and works hard without possession. Lopez is a talented player and possesses the potential to reach the top.
With Bruno Fernandes’ existing deal set to run until next summer, United seemingly wanted to buy a new creative midfielder this year.
On the other hand, it appears Arsenal were seeking a new No.10 this summer as Martin Odegaard displayed inconsistent performances last term. However, the Norwegian has enjoyed a stellar start this season.
López would have been a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal or Man Utd had either club eventually managed to purchase him before the deadline.
