    Monarchs Prevail with Last Second Goal to Send Them to the Championship Game – Methodist University Athletics

    FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.  Methodist women’s soccer hosted Greensboro College in the semifinals of the USA South Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament on Thursday night. This grueling match came down to the closing seconds, when Corrine Shovlain scored the game-winner to give the Monarchs a 2-1 victory over the Pride at Duggins Soccer Stadium.

    Records: Methodist 15-2-1, Greensboro 6-9-4

    Location: Duggins Soccer Stadium, Fayetteville, North Carolina

    HOW IT HAPPENED

    • Even with all the early pressure by Methodist, it would Greensboro to score the first goal of the contest, in the 19th minute. Haley Russell of the Pride collected the ball, while Monarchs were trying to clear, and found the back corner of the net on a shot from about 25 yards out.
    • Despite being down now, Methodist kept firing off shots but none would connect with the back of the net. Finally, in the 72nd minute the Monarchs managed to get one off a corner kick, when Harris Barr sent it into the box and Rachel Johnson finished it off with a header.
    • The score stay deadlock at 1-1 for the remainder of regulation and majority of overtime. The game looked like it was about to go into penalty kicks until Shovlain, the 2022 USA South Women’s Soccer Player of the Year, scored with 19 seconds left on the clock. Once again off a Barr corner kick that first got to Alyssa Morrell before Shovlain knocked it in the net.

    STAT FACTS

    • The shot difference in this match was extremely one sided. The Monarchs shot the ball 35 time, with 13 reaching net, while Greensboro took five and only two shots on goal.
    • Possession was heavily favored by Methodist with their 14 corner kicks throughout the game. The Pride only had three corners in the first half.
    • Getting the win between the pipes was Carolina Simpkins, after coming in to start the second half. Though she gets the loss, Sofia Pagnamenta had game-high 11 saves.

    Methodist will have one day off before hosting Southern Virginia University on Saturday in the USA South Women’s Soccer Tournament Championship Game. Game time is set for 1 PM.
