The Houston Astros beat the Philadelphia Phillies to win the 2022 World Series

The GIST: Check on your Philadelphia friends this morning because Philly made the wrong kind of history on Saturday, becoming the first city to lose two major sports championships on the same day.

    • While the City of Brotherly Love mourns, give it up for the 2022 World Series champion Houston Astros and 2022 MLS Cup champ LAFC.

⚾️ World Series: The ’Stros dominated their way to their “second” franchise title, capping off an incredible 11-2 postseason run with Saturday’s trophy-clinching 4–1 Game 6 win over the Philadelphia Phillies. Rookie shortstop Jeremy Peña earned World Series MVP honors after posting a wildly impressive .400 series batting average, punctuated by plenty of clutch hits.

⚽️ MLS Cup: LAFC delivered a Hollywood ending on Saturday, clinching their first ‘ship after one of the most exhilarating MLS games ever. The Philadelphia Union nearly nabbed the trophy after taking a 3–2 lead with a 124th minute goal, but Black & Gold forward Gareth Bale said no way, tying the game with a 128th minute header to send it to penalty kicks.

    • Starting LAFC goalie Maxime Crépeau left in extra time with a brutal injury (and a red card), leaving it up to backup goalie (and former Union player) John McCarthy.
    • Against all odds, McCarthy shined, stopping two penalties and winning the MLS Cup MVP. A Cinderella story, indeed.
