‘It was very strange for me’ – Deep Dasgupta opines on Suryakumar Yadav’s performance in Asia Cup 2023 game against Bangladesh

Team India sustained their first loss of the ongoing Asia Cup 2023. The side took on Bangladesh in the Super Four stage of the competition and was unable to chase down the target due to the subpar performances from the batters. The likes of Rohit Sharma, Tilak Varma, KL Rahul, and many more were unable to go big and amass some important runs for their side, which would have helped them register a win.

However, one performance that came under the spotlight was that of star batter Suryakumar Yadav. The 33-year-old scored 26 runs in 34 deliveries and left another opportunity to make his name in ODI cricket go begging.

Seeing his performance, pundits like Deep Dasgupta and Matthew Hayden came forward to talk about his showings in ODI cricket. Deep Dasgupta opined that it was very strange for him to witness Suryakumar Yadav attempting to play the same shot.

“It was very strange for me, because it seemed like that the only shot that he wanted to play was a sweep. I mean we have generally seen him being so good against the spinners, going over extra cover, mid off, he has other options. It was such a strange innings because all he wanted to do was sweep. I can understand that he is struggling. I can understand when you go out there, you connect a few and you feel confident. He was struggling to play that shot and he still went for it anyway,” Deep Dasgupta told StarSports.

I really understand the mindset: Hayden

Former Australian cricketer Matthew Hayden also gave his take on Suryakumar Yadav’s performance in the last Super game of the Asia Cup 2023. Hayden opined that he understands that Suryakumar Yadav has not yet found what kind of play style he has to adopt in ODI cricket.

I really understand the mindset, because I had 7 years sitting in the nets not getting a game for Australia, and you have these moments where you perform incredibly well for your states and in Suryakumar Yadav‘s case – in First class cricket and in the IPL where his strike rate is 170+. When it comes to the ODI format, he has not quite found, or decoded what sort of player he is going to be,” Hayden said.
