Antony with more bookings than goals but Hojlund impressive – Ten Hag’s signings assessed

Erik ten Hag is coming under a huge amount of pressure as Manchester United continue their nightmare start to the campaign.

The Red Devils have lost five of their ten Premier League games this season while also losing two from three in the Champions League.

United were embarrassed by Man City at Old Trafford on Sunday, with their bitter rivals easing to a 3-0 win in the derby.

That result has seen fans question the squad that Ten Hag has built, so talkSPORT.com takes a look at how much he has spent and on who…

How much has Ten Hag spent on signings?

Since arriving at United in the summer of 2022, Ten Hag has spent over £400million on new signings.

Only Chelsea have spent more than the Red Devils under the Dutchman.

United’s £400million spending has been split between 16 different new arrivals.

Antony is the most expensive signing under Ten Hag after he brought the Brazilian with him from Ajax for a whopping £88million.

The winger’s international teammate Casemiro was signed for £70million while Lisandro Martinez was another big-money arrival for £55million.

The Red Devils also paid over £180million for Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund, leaving Ten Hag with a huge amount of money spent at Old Trafford.

    • Casemiro – £70million
    • Mason Mount – £60million

    • Andre Onana – £47million
    • Tyrell Malacia – £14million
    • Altay Bayindir – £4.3million

    How have the signings fared?

Despite all the money spent, most of United’s signings under Ten Hag have struggled.

Antony is one of the club’s most expensive ever arrivals but he has most certainly not lived up to the price tag.

The 23-year-old has scored eight goals and provided three assists in 53 appearances for the club in all competitions.

In fact, Antony has been shown a yellow card more times than he has scored goals during his time at the club.

His latest caution came as he kicked out at Jeremy Doku during United’s Manchester derby defeat, with his frustration showing through on the pitch.

This led to criticism from pundits and fans alike with patience wearing thin with the winger.

It’s fair to say that the £88m fee paid to Ajax has ended up being a huge waste for Ten Hag.

As for Casemiro, he began his United career positively but this season his performances have dipped with fans frustrated.

Lisandro Martinez is a favourite at Old Trafford, with his aggressive nature making him something of a cult hero soon after joining the club.

The defender has been impressive since arriving but after suffering an injury last season, he is yet to feature this campaign.

A huge amount of Ten Hag’s overall spend came this summer but questions have been asked about whether it was spent on the right players.

Mason Mount has struggled to get going after leaving Chelsea, failing to score and only providing one assist for the club in eight games.

He has been out with an injury, so more time is expected to be given before a real judgement is made on the signing.

In goal, Andre Onana was picked to replace David de Gea and his opening performances proved his £47m price tag to be worth it.

He is capable of making some great saves but errors on the ball have crept into his game and he has received criticism from fans and club legends alike since his arrival.

Rasmus Hojlund has provided some positivity though, with his first few games for United proving he will be a real talent.

The 20-year-old has quickly become a fan favourite and Ten Hag has been booed multiple times by his own supporters for substituting the striker.

As for the other 10 signings, they have largely been loans and frees with only Tyrell Malacia and Altay Bayindir arriving for a cash sum.

Christian Eriksen has proved to be a reliable midfielder after being signed for free while Jonny Evans joined this summer for nothing.

Wout Weghort’s loan spell in Manchester last season was one to forget while Marcel Sabitzer wasn’t signed on a permanent deal following his shot stint.

So overall, Ten Hag’s signings have very rarely paid off and this has left him with a squad that are not living up to expectations.

The United boss is under huge pressure to keep his job but he is keeping up hope that his side can turn their fortunes around soon.
