Peruvian football club Alianza Lima might have just pulled off the most petty act of 2023 after losing the league title to their bitter rivals Universitario.
Alianza Lima were the two-time reigning champions and were confident of making it three Liga 1 titles in a row in a two-leg playoff for the title.
Lima bagged a 1-1 draw in the away leg and returned to their home stadium Alejandro Villanueva Stadium on Wednesday for the second clash.

But things came undone when Universitario scored in just the third minute, before adding a second unanswered goal eight minutes before full-time – a stunner from outside the box – to seal a first league title in a decade.
Alianza Lima responded in the pettiest way imaginable when the final whistle was blown, immediately turning off every light in the stadium in an attempt to stifle their rivals’ celebrations.

It was a 27th title for ‘La U’, taking them two clear of their great rivals.
And luckily, Universitario were able to celebrate in style – with players using mobile phone lights and holding flares after the stadium was sent into total darkness.
Arsenal fan Piers Morgan joked on X (formerly Twitter) that the Gunners should do the same if Tottenham ever seal the Premier League at the Emirates.
“I’d like to think we’d be just as petty if Spurs won the League at our place,” he wrote.
