Jorginho’s agent sets deadline for Arsenal to resume ‘standstill’ contract talks

Arsenal have been set a deadline for talks over extending Jorginho’s deal at the club.

The Italian signed from London rivals Chelsea in January on a one-and-a-half year contract in a £12million deal.

With his contract expiring in June, he is therefore just seven months away from becoming a free agent.

Jorginho has made eight starts for Arsenal this season and was nearly a Premier League title winner with them last term.

However, with little time remaining on his current deal, his agent Joao Santos has issued a timeframe for the club to extend his stay.

Speaking to TUTTOmercatoWEB on the current situation regarding his client’s future in north London, he said: “Everything is at a standstill.

“We’ll think about it after February. However, the priority remains Arsenal.”

Jorginho is part of an Arsenal side that made two midfield signings in the summer, with Declan Rice and Kai Havertz both joining.

As a result, the 31-year-old is not guaranteed appearances in the starting XI under Mikel Arteta despite his experience.

He signed for Chelsea in 2018, winning the Champions League and the Europa League with the Blues before signing for Arsenal.

Despite a lack of certainty, the Gunners are his priority

Having formerly played for Napoli, the midfielder has been linked with a move back to Italy on more than one occasion.

Jorginho has remained put for now though, although this could change in the coming months should he not extend his contract.

His deal has the option for an extra year, something Arsenal could choose to exercise to sustain their squad depth.

Jorginho has made 30 appearances in total for the Gunners across all competitions, although is yet to score for the club.
