Texans QB CJ Stroud enters concussion protocol after taking big hit

Houston Texans quarterback CJ Stroud left Sunday’s game against the New York Jets under concerning circumstances after taking a big hit in the fourth quarter.

Stroud was in significant pain after taking a big hit from Jets pass rusher Quinnen Williams. The most concerning part of the hit came when Stroud appeared to hit his head hard on the turf as he went down. He remained down for several moments.

Stroud eventually got up and walked off the field under his own power, but he looked very unsteady as he went to the locker room. The Texans confirmed that the rookie quarterback was being evaluated for a concussion.

Stroud hit his head on the turf very hard, so the potential head injury is unfortunately not a surprise. It is hard to envision him returning Sunday, especially with the Texans trailing by three scores.

Among the class of rookie quarterbacks in 2023, Stroud has easily been the most impressive. Entering Sunday’s contest, he was leading the league with 3,540 passing yards to go with 23 total touchdowns.
