Snapshot of round 16 of the A-League Women season

ROUND 16 OF THE A-LEAGUE WOMEN COMPETITION AT A GLANCE:

THEY SAID IT: “Never. Not with this group. Not the way we play. We’ll always go out. We’ll go for the throat every time. That’s the way we want to play. We’re not going to stand off. We’re going to throw everything to win games” – Asked whether she had lost faith in her side’s ability to turn the game around from 2-1 against Brisbane Roar, Western United coach Kat Smith was quick to set the record straight. United walked away with the three points thanks to late goals from Adriana Taranto and Chloe Logarzo.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Michelle Heyman capped her Matildas recall by again starring for Canberra United. The veteran striker’s double against Perth Glory took her to a league-leading 12 goals for the season.

KEY STAT: Perth must now search for their first win in six games after drawing 2-2 with Canberra United. The Glory have won only two of their past 10 matches, with three draws and three losses in their most recent run. The last time they recorded a longer losing run in the competition was a nine-match span from February to March in 2021.

BEAT THAT: Emily Gielnik earned fifth-placed Melbourne Victory a share of the points with her 66th-minute screamer against Central Coast. Dashing forward after a sleek pass from Jamilla Rankin, Gielnik rocketed the ball into the back corner from just outside the penalty arc.

TALKING POINT: Sydney’s Saturday got off to a rough start when their bus travelled to Bundoora, where Melbourne City used to be based, instead of Casey Fields, forcing a quick turnaround which caused their game to be delayed by half an hour.

UNDER PRESSURE: Sydney’s rough Saturday continued when they blew a golden chance to go top of the competition, having a penalty saved in a 0-0 draw with leaders City. The defending premiers and champions have now slipped from second to third after Western United’s 3-2 win over Brisbane.

WHAT’S NEXT: Western Sydney kick off round 17 when they attempt to to oust Melbourne Victory from their top-four spot on Friday night. On Saturday, Sydney will strive to return to second place against strugglers Canberra United while Newcastle play Brisbane. Adelaide United make the trip to league leaders Melbourne City on Sunday, while Western United remain at home to host Wellington. Closing out the weekend, seventh-placed Central Coast continue their top six campaign against Perth Glory.
