Why Liverpool play twice in Gameweek 25 as Reds battle to hold league lead

Liverpool’s relentless schedule shows no sign of abating with the Reds being one of four teams involved in a double Gameweek 25.

Jurgen Klopp‘s side are still going strong in all four competitions which has wreaked havoc with their Premier League schedule.

The Merseyside outfit went back to the top of the table following their 3-1 win over Burnley last time out.

Liverpool remain two points clear of Manchester City in second, although the defending champions have a game in hand.

Both clubs are now in action twice in Gameweek 25, with Liverpool facing Brentford away before hosting Luton, while City welcome Chelsea and then the Bees to the Etihad.

Why are Liverpool playing twice in Gameweek 25?

Liverpool’s participation in the Carabao Cup final has meant they have had to cram in their league fixtures.

Liverpool are due to travel to London to face Brentford on Saturday, live on talkSPORT, before hosting Luton Town the following weekend.

However, the Reds will instead face Chelsea in a repeat of the 2022 Carabao Cup final at Wembley on the Sunday.

That has seen their clash with Luton moved forward a few days into a double Gameweek 25 after being scheduled for next Wednesday.

Liverpool’s packed schedule is all the more difficult due to their mounting injury crisis, which was added to by Trent Alexander-Arnold after he was forced off during their win over Burnley.

Speaking on the difficulties of mounting a title challenge, Klopp said: “I know it’s every week.

“You add in Tottenham – who got a big win for them today. Villa play tomorrow. They are all in the mix and Arsenal obviously. Two weeks ago we had the perfect squad situation.

“Two weeks later we are short in each area. Like, wow. It all can happen.

“We all need luck to get through it when you don’t have that, you have to fight through it.”
