It seems that Stefon Diggs simply can’t keep a low profile, as the polarizing Bills receiver once again gave credence to speculation that he might not be happy in Buffalo.
The most recent installment of the Diggs saga began when Robert Griffin III put out a video discussing the mutually beneficial relationship between Diggs and his quarterback in Buffalo, Josh Allen.
A fan tweeted below the video that while Allen does benefit from playing with a top receiver like Diggs, the former Maryland Terrapin is “not essential” to his quarterback’s success, to which Diggs responded “You sure?”
At his best, Diggs has been one of the best receivers in all of football for quite some time. In 2020, his first year in Buffalo, he led the NFL in receptions and receiving yardage, earning his first of four consecutive Pro Bowl trips and his only All-Pro nod to date.
However, he is now on the wrong side of 30 years old, and was less productive this season than he was in years past despite strong play from Allen.
Blame for Diggs’s statistical downturn can be assigned in any one of many directions, but the star receiver is clearly not looking to claim any. It would cost an already cash-strapped Buffalo squad a good amount of money to cut Diggs, as $18M of his contract for this year recently became guaranteed.
This means that whether or not the front office wants Diggs to remain on the team, they’ll have to find a different way to rectify the situation. With the NFL Draft coming up later this month, it’ll be fascinating to see if the Bills find a trade deal for Diggs, or if they’re able to find a way to make the pairing continue to work for this season and beyond.
