The Dutchman delivered the FA Cup, by beating bitter rivals Manchester City in the final, but he cannot escape the poor Premier League season the club endured.

United finished eighth, their lowest ever Premier League finish, and set a series of unwanted records.

Speculation had been mounting that Ten Hag would go regardless of the FA Cup final result.

It is more than two weeks since that match and there is no further clarity on whether he will stay or go.

Ratcliffe, who spent £1billion to buy 25 per cent of United, is seemingly exploring all options.

Bild first reported that Tuchel met with Ratcliffe in Monaco on Tuesday.

The former Chelsea boss left Bayern Munich at the end of the season.

He is said to have laid out his vision for how he would get the best out of underperforming players like Jadon Sancho and Mason Mount.

Tuchel is believed to have pointed to his work with players like Antonio Rudiger in the past.

However, Fabrizio Romano reports that Tuchel is not planning to take the United job.

He made the decision after meeting with the Red Devils’ hierarchy and has decided he wants a break.

Gareth Southgate and Graham Potter are also candidates for the Old Trafford job.

Potter is a contender for the vacant Leicester manager position, with Enzo Maresca heading to Chelsea.

Southgate is currently preparing to take England to Euro 2024.

Ten Hag is preparing as though he will be the Manchester United manager next season.

He has won two trophies in his two seasons in charge, with the Carabao Cup last season to go with his FA Cup.

After the FA Cup final, Ten Hag said: “I’m in a project and we are exactly where we want to be.

“We are constructing a team and when I took over, it was a mess at Man United. We are now on our way to constructing a team for the future.

“There will be ups and downs, but you see, the team is developing, the team is winning and at the end of the day, it is about winning trophies.

“The team also plays to an identity, but you need the players to be available. You need a strong squad in top football, especially when you play in England and in Europe.

“The Premier League is so competitive, so you need a very good squad, and you need the players available in that squad.

“There is still a lot of work to do, but we are exactly where we are. We have value in the squad, and we have players with high potential who are progressing very well.

“The team is progressing, and we are winning trophies. Two trophies in two years is not bad.

“Three finals is not bad, but we have to keep going. I’m not satisfied with it.

“We have to do better and if they don’t want me anymore, then I’ll go anywhere else to win trophies because that is what I have done my whole career.”
