Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai set to break 64-year Euros record

Liverpool are set to boast a record-breaking star in their squad following this weekend’s Euro 2024 opening fixtures.

While players such as Kylian Mbappe, Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Kane are expected to light up the tournament, one Anfield hero will break a record which has lasted 64 years.

The Reds boast a host of players that will skipper their countries in Germany this summer with Virgil van Dijk leading the Netherlands and Andy Robertson with Scotland.

But Dominik Szoboszlai will make headlines if he features in Hungary’s Euro 2024 opener against Switzerland on Saturday.

The midfielder was handed the armband by head coach Marco Rossi in November 2022 and has since gone on to inspire the Magyars to Euro 2024 qualification.

Szoboszlai was 22 years old when he had the honour of being made captain of his national team and now he is set to break the record of becoming the youngest ever captain in Euros history since the tournament’s inception in 1960.

The Liverpool star is expected to lead his side out in Cologne at the age of 23 years, seven months and 21 days.

That eclipses Kane who was handed the England captaincy ahead of the 2018 World Cup aged 23 years 10 months and 13 days and Mbappe who was named France skipper at the age of 24.

Ahead of the record-breaking accomplishment, Szoboszlai spoke of his pride in achieving the feat and paid tribute to Rossi for placing faith in him to lead his country.

“A few days ago, I found out that I’ll be the youngest team captain of all time at the European Championship; this is a great honour for me and at the same time, I would like to thank Marco Rossi for trusting me and for giving me the opportunity to lead the team to the European Championship,” Szoboszlai told his press conference on Tuesday.

Hungary go into the tournament in a rich vein of form after a recent 14-match unbeaten run, which was ended by the Republic of Ireland in last week’s Euro 2024 tune-up game.

They were keen to show the defeat in Dublin was merely a blip by sweeping aside Israel 3-0 in a friendly last Saturday.

A win over a new-look Swiss outfit would put Rossi’s men in a commanding position to qualify for the knockout rounds.

And that could see Szoboszlai come up against England teammates Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joe Gomez should the Three Lions finish second in Group C and Hungary top their group.
