Busy league weekend for British cross-country runners

Latest round-up includes news from the Birmingham, Chiltern, Essex, Hampshire and Met leagues plus the Kent Masters Champs

BIRMINGHAM LEAGUE, Division 1, Match 2, Stoke, November 30

Hosts City of Stoke used Betley Court Farm as their venue for the division one match which also saw the Midland Women’s League top flight join in the fun.

The Birchfield pairing of Kadar Omar and junior Aron Gebremariam took the honours from a trio of Birmingham University runners led by Finley Proffitt.

For the refugee pair up ahead, it was the more experienced Omar who comfortably got the better of his previously undefeated clubmate in his first outing over the country for a couple of years.

Earlier in the year, Gebremariam notched up wins in English Schools, Inter-Counties and English National cross-country championships.

Further back, Birchfield’s Ed Banks, champion last winter, continued his run as top veteran in the league.

CHILTERN LEAGUE, Match 3, Luton, Bedfordshire November 30

The third match was held at Stopsley, a venue that has hosted two English National championships in the 1970s and 1980s.

Richard Slade scored a repeat victory for Chiltern Harriers and did so over Bedford & County’s Harry Brodie with Headington’s Marcus Shantry a minute back in third.

Bedford & County retained control of the league overall with victory in both men’s and women’s sections but, as is usual with the pre-Christmas fixtures, numbers were down on the two earlier matches.

In the senior women’s event, it was regular league winner Rebecca Murray who again dominated and did so, for the second match in a row, over junior Madeleine Pearce as top master Kate Rennie, a British & Irish Masters champion, took third.

For the boys, Chiltern Harriers’ Tom Ford scored a repeat under-15 race win.

For the women, Rebecca Luxton, a regular in the England Masters teams in their International, took the women’s race.

Elsewhere, it was Brentwood Beagles’ Olivia Forrest who stood out with her umpteenth victory of the year in the under-17 women’s event.

W45, W35 and W55 winner at the Kent Masters Champs (Mark Hookway)

KENT MASTERS CHAMPIONHIPS, Dartford, November 30

With pre-race favourites Andrea Clement and Amy Clements not showing, it was older athletes who dominated the overall women’s race, Steve Smythe reports.

Renata McDonnell, 50, who was third overall in 2019 when she won 45-54 gold, regained the age group title with a strong last lap and won her biggest overall race to date.

A few seconds back, AW masters athlete of the year Clare Elms came close to becoming the oldest ever overall winner. The W60, who uniquely has won Kent senior women as well as Kent W35-44, W45-54 and W55-64 titles in both team and individual events, narrowly fell short of her ninth overall crown.

However, Elms won her 13th individual Kent masters gold in this event by finishing 30 seconds ahead of former national road champion Maria Heslop in the W55 plus age group.

The Kent runner also finished ahead of early overall runaway leader Imogen McLennan who won W35-44 gold.

The W45 team title went to Medway though curiously all three of the winning Kent W35 team were eligible for the W45 event.

Kent AC won the W35 team gold aided by W50 Victoria Buck moving down an age group to win W35 individual bronze but Tonbridge won the W55 team title.

    Janet Lenton (Mark Hookway)

Janet Lenton retained her W65 title which was held within the M60 plus event, where Ben Reynolds, already a many-time winner of the county M40 and M50 titles added the M60 at his first attempt.

With the following day’s BMAF 5km in mind, he held back until the last lap then stretched away for a clear victory ahead of former champion Roger Beswick.

Last year’s runner-up Andy Howey, who had only done one parkrun and no other races in the 12 months since, and had only two training runs since September, held on for third.

Reynolds also won a team gold for Tonbridge as just three points covered the top three.

Ben Reynolds leads Andy Howey and Roger Beswick (Mark Hookway)

Perhaps controversially, Kent don’t allow M35s to race but it was M45s anyway who dominated the 40-49 event with the first four places.

Medway’s Anthony Webb, who has been first vet in all three Kent Leagues this winter, regained the title he last won in 2019 with a strong finish.

In 2019 there were also individual golds for Reynolds, McDonnell and Elms.

    Anthony Webb (Mark Hookway)

Danny Kendall and Ben Shearer also stuck to the Kent League script matching their positions there and that start enabled Cambridge Harriers to win the team title but it was close as Kent’s better packing left them just a point short.

Kent did win the M50 team race though gold went for the first time to Dulwich’s Andy Bond as the race attracted more runners than the M40 event.

Bond who ran for England in the masters international in Ireland and was first M45 in 2019 when third overall, was nursing a calf problem and at the start of the last of four big laps he had dropped off the leading three.

However, in the space of around 400m he went from a tailed off fourth into a clear lead and he held that to the finish from Blackheath’s Doug Varney who showed a huge improvement from his Kent League form.

Andrew Lawes, who celebrated his 70th birthday a few days earlier, dominated the M70 race from former champion Julian Spencer-Wood and Kent League leader John Tolhurst.

HAMPSHIRE LEAGUE, Match 3, Bournemouth, Dorset, November 30

The league again went outside the county boundaries with the trip down the A35 to Kings Park and the senior men’s event saw refugee Abdinasir Mohamoud Elmi score his third straight win of the campaign.

This time the Bournemouth man was on his adopted home terrain and ran out a winner by almost two minutes over the zig-zag course.

There was a repeat under-13 boys win for Lorenzo Moss of Andover, the third quickest in his age group in the country with a 16:47 best.

Under-17 Katie Pye scored a repeat senior women’s race victory and made it a double in the women’s team standings.

Elsewhere, youngsters from Aldershot generally gave the event a miss but nobody told their under-15 girls that this was the case, as Poppy Guest led home three more of her team mates in their race.

Their club continued their autumn domination of the age group and have won both English relay championships at Sutton Park and Berry Hill Mansfield in recent weeks.

    OXFORDSHIRE LEAGUE, Cirencester, December 1

A month earlier, Tonbridge’s Ben Cole won the Kent League but here turned out for Swindon to add the Oxfordshire one to his portfolio of victories.

START FITNESS MET LEAGUE, Match 3, Hillingdon House Farm, Uxbridge, November 30

Both Alex Lepretre and Annabel Gummow made light work of the Hillingdon House Farm course, with the brook and ski slope to negotiate, Alastair Aitken reports.

Lepretre was strong throughout. However, runner-up Thomas Butler, ran his best ever senior Met League race after being out of the frame for over eight years in Met Leagues, as he held off Andy Lawrence plus three Highgate men.

Highgate had 12 in 53 out of a field of more than 400. So, it is still surprising Victoria Park & Tower Hamlets are quite close with 1812 behind Highgate’s 1897.

Ben Noad, who was 50th and scoring for Highgate, was a leading UK international cross country runner in his day. Richard Bloom still runs well at 79, coming 382 of 407 on such a testing course.

Annabel Gummow had to run well to beat established Highgate runner Hannah Viner, who was second.
