The Kalinga Indoor Stadium in Bhubaneswar will host the 2028 World Athletics Indoor Championships, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) announced on Thursday.
The World Athletics Council allotted the event to India following its meeting in Torun, Poland, the venue of the 2026 edition starting on Friday. India last hosted a global athletics event, the World Half-Marathon, in Delhi in 2004.
“The global competition will be held at the Kalinga Indoor Stadium,” confirmed Athletics Federation of India president Bahadur Singh Sagoo.
A two-member delegation from World Athletics had inspected the venue in January last. The stadium, which is the first of its kind in India, is set to host the inaugural National Indoors on March 24 and 25.
The venue is also the front-runner to host the Asian Indoor Championships in 2028. An Asian Athletics Association team had inspected the Kalinga Stadium last month.
