The potential controversy involving New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel and well-known NFL insider Dianna Russini of The Athletic continues to generate headlines and discussions leading up to the 2026 NFL Draft, which gets underway on the night of April 23.
On Monday, longtime sports reporter Michael Holley of NBC Sports Boston revealed during an on-air segment that he recently spoke with a former Patriots player who doesn’t agree that it’s currently “business as usual” for the reigning AFC champions this spring.
Patriots players will want answers regarding Mike Vrabel, Dianna Russini situation
“I talked to a former (Patriots) player, and he said, ‘The hell they won’t want answers. You think Mike Vrabel can just brush this under the rug without talking to the players?'” Holley explained, per Manny Gomez of NJ Advance Media. “And the great quote from the former player was, ‘Hey, coaches don’t treat us like they treat the media.'”
Photos recently surfaced showing Vrabel and Russini holding hands, hugging and lounging near a pool at a resort in Sedona, Ariz., earlier this spring. The two later released statements denying any wrongdoing, but Russini has since been “sidelined” from actively reporting on the NFL for The Athletic.
It’s unclear if the NFL is looking into whether or not Vrabel violated the league’s tampering rules by having any kind of close relationship with Russini. He ultimately may receive no punishment related to this situation, but it sounds like he could face some difficult questions inside the locker room when Phase 1 of the Patriots’ offseason program begins on April 20.
Mike Vrabel will need to address the elephant in the room
“I think Vrabel will have to say something to his team,” Holley continued during the segment. “They won’t necessarily say, ‘Hey, what’s going on at home’ or ‘Why are you doing anything with her?’ or anything like that. I think he’s gonna have to answer to something that has been in the news for a while. He’s their head coach and, for his credibility, he’s gonna have to say something to the team.”
According to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, Vrabel is not expected to publicly speak with media members until the draft next week. One wonders if Vrabel will reveal whether or not he said anything to his players about what has become a massive storyline hovering over the Patriots coming off their Super Bowl defeat.
