The inmates at FCI Atlanta have complained that the Superman sequel shooting inside the prison has affected their usual routine and left them more confined to their cells while cutting them off from the commissary. According to a TMZ article dated April 23, 2026, the sequel to James Gunn’s 2025 flick is currently in production, and the team is shooting in a small section inside the Atlanta prison.
Inmates claimed that the shoot is allegedly disrupting their routine and reduced their access outside their cells. A spokesperson for the Federal Bureau of Prisons told the publication that a warden putting a facility on “modified operations status” was usually for the safety of staff and inmates.
Another spokesperson for the Federal Bureau of Prisons told TMZ on April 23 that the film shooting inside the facility was a good thing for the Atlanta inmates. They claimed that inmates were getting better meals because the food was being prepared in their respective housing units instead of being served in the communal dining hall.
James Gunn, who helmed the first movie starring David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult, shared a photo of the shooting from inside the facility. The picture, posted to his Instagram account on April 20, showed a black-and-red chessboard, an open packet of chips, and a Van Kull Prison inmate badge for Lex Luthor, played by Hoult. It is believed that Luthor, the antagonist in the first movie, might be in prison in the second movie.
The Superman sequel is titled Man of Tomorrow
The sequel, titled Superman: Man of Tomorrow, is currently in production and scheduled for release in 2027. According to Variety, the movie will follow Clark Kent, aka Superman (played by David Corenswet), teaming up with nemesis Lex Luthor (played by Nicholas Hoult) to take down a bigger villain, Brainiac (played by Lars Eidinger).
Rachel Brosnahan will reprise her role as Lois Lane, while Skyler Gisondo will play Jimmy Olsen. Other actors reprising their roles include Isabela Merced, Nathan Fillion, and Edi Gathegi. Adria Arjona will join the ensemble cast as Maxima, an alien queen who is also Superman’s potential love interest.
In addition to the Superman sequel, James Gunn’s DC Studios is also preparing for the release of Supergirl, directed by Craig Gillespie and starring House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock. David Corenswet is expected to appear in Supergirl, which will come out on June 26, 2026.
Gunn and Gillespie spoke about the movie at a New York event in December 2025, with Gillespie saying the movie was “an anti-hero story.” Gunn added that the superhero will be flawed like her male counterparts, adding:
“So many times female superheroes are so perfect. She’s not that at all. Like male superheroes have been allowed to be for a while.”
Superman: Man of Tomorrow has a release date on July 9, 2027. Another DC Studios release that year is Matt Reeves’ The Batman: Part II, starring Robert Pattinson. The movie will be released on October 1, 2027, four years after the first part came out in March 2022.
