Fabrizio Romano has dropped a fresh update on Chelsea‘s interest in Como manager Cesc Fabregas, which contradicts previous reports.
What Cesc Fabregas has said about leaving Como
Calum McFarlane has been named as the Blues’ interim manager until the end of the season, following the departure of Liam Rosenior earlier this week, but the search for a new permanent boss is now underway, with Fabregas among the options.
When asked about a potential return to Stamford Bridge, the Spaniard said: “Nothing to say about that. It’d be stupid to think about that now, my focus is on the next game against Genoa. I believe I will continue my chapter as Como head coach and focus on the next games.
“I would be crazy to think of anything else rather than these next five games and getting my team into Europe for the first time in history. I have not seen or heard any comments that my president said other than he told me he values me very highly.”
There have also been reports the Como manager has been told he is free to move on in the summer, and that Chelsea are ready to hire him, but a fresh update from Romano about the situation is in contradiction.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, the transfer expert said: “At the moment, my understanding is that Como are convinced they will continue with Cesc Fabregas. Como’s feeling is that Cesc will be their manager next season, and they hope to be in European football with Cesc Fabregas as the coach.
“But at the moment, still depending also on what happens at Chelsea, because as of now, Chelsea are yet to decide who is going to be the new coach, are yet to attack and go for the coach they want. They are considering candidates, they’re exploring possibilities, but this process will take time.”
Much like Rosenior, Fabregas is in the early stages of his managerial career, but he has done a stellar job at Como to date, with the Italian side sixth in the Serie A table and pushing for European qualification.
Cesc Fabregas’ record as Como manager
- 78 matches played
- 33 wins
- 21 draws
- 24 defeats
- 1.54 points per game
The 38-year-old prefers to implement a 4-2-3-1 system, and he has received plaudits from former England boss Fabio Capello, who tipped him for the AC Milan job earlier this season, saying: “I like his football. At Como he showed interesting things. And he already seems sufficiently ready.”
With that in mind, Fabregas could be an exciting appointment for Chelsea, but his lack of top-level experience as a manager could be an issue, and a move to Stamford Bridge may not even be tempting enough if McFarlane’s side miss out on Europe, which is starting to look more likely.
