The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) breaks the silence over Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s on-field heated moment with a Sri Lanka A team cricketer during the Tri-Nation ODI series in the island nation.

There were multiple claims across social media platforms suggesting BCCI could take strict steps to teach the 15-year-old a lesson. The board secretary, Devajit Saikia, has denied all of those claims about possible steps against the batter.

Will BCCI take action against Vaibhav Sooryavanshi?

Devajit Saikia says that taking steps against a player’s behavior during a match is completely in the domain of the match referee. If the match referee wants to take some steps, he can, but there is nothing to do with BCCI, as BCCI has no right to take steps against any of their players based on such incidents.

“The BCCI is not the authority in such matters. We should not intrude into an area where the match referee and the umpires are the primary officials empowered to make decisions regarding incidents that occur on the field of play,” Saikia told the news agency PTI through a video.

Saikia says that they are well aware of the claims going around across social media platforms, which are completely baseless and false, as according to the rule book, the national cricket governing body has no authority to interfere in an on-field incident, as there are umpires and match referees.

“A lot of things are being discussed on social media, including speculation that the BCCI is contemplating action. But do you want the BCCI to step into the domain of the match referee?”, the board secretary raises the question.

“Otherwise, it would set a wrong precedent. It would amount to interference in the domain of the match referee, which the BCCI is not going to do. This is not our job, and it is not provided for in our rule book,” he added.

BCCI makes its position clear on the incident

Devajit Saikia assured that BCCI is not going to take any step against Vaibhav Sooryavanshi based on the incident happed in Sri Lanka. If anything wrong happened on the ground, then it is the duty of the match referee and the umpires to look after it.

“A lot of speculation is being made, but these are baseless speculations. I assure you that the BCCI will not intrude into the domain of the match referee, who is the competent authority. If there is anything wrong on the field relating to a player or any cricketing activity, the appropriate officials will deal with it,” Saikia mentioned.

Why is there controversy around Vaibhav Sooryavanshi?

Sooryavanshi, who is struggling with his form in Sri Lanka, found himself in a heated situation after India A lost a match against Sri Lanka A team during the Tri-Nation A Series in Dambulla on 15 June 2026. According to reports, there were verbal spats between the players of both sides, but Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was in central of the stage.
