When will Roger Goodell’s current deal expire?

Roger Goodell’s current deal is set to run out next March. However, a new deal will keep him in power to oversee critical upcoming negotiations regarding early opt-outs for new broadcasting rights.

Furthermore, a collective bargaining agreement is due and widely expected to push for an 18-game regular season. The exact timeline for the new deal is fluid. However, owners could finalize the deal as early as their special Aug. 26 meeting in Atlanta or their October quarterly meeting in New York.

Roger Goodell took over the reins of the NFL from Paul Tagliabue in Sept. 2006. He has since cemented his status as a giant in sports administration, with the NFL undergoing several transformation under him.

Climbing the ranks from an administrative intern in 1982 to the league’s top office, he has quadrapled the NFL’s revenue past the $23 billion mark. Average franchise valuations under him has also grown to $7.1 billion.

However, despite his strides, Goodell remains a polarizing figure, with a career marked by fierce public turbulence. He has been a constant subject of boos from fans at the annual NFL Draft.

He also endures strong criticism over inconsistent player discipline and high-profile scandals like Spygate, Deflategate, and Bountygate. With over $500 million in career earnings, the expected deal is a massive vote of confidence in Goodell from the league owners.
