Tennis legend Martina Navratilova took a brutal condemnation of US President Donald Trump, who seemingly refused to leave the stage during Spain’s historic World Cup-lifting moment. In a lopsided final, Ferran Torres fired the winner past goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez to notch a 1-0 win over Argentina at MetLife Stadium.
As Spain revelled in their second World Cup triumph after the memorable night in South Africa in 2010, Trump recreated similar scenes from last year’s Club World Cup. After Chelsea‘s 3-0 win over PSG, Trump handed the trophy to club captain Reece James and stayed in the frame for the celebrations, which left Cole Palmer “confused.”
Thanks for the submission!
A similar situation unfolded at the end of the 2026 World Cup final. After Trump presented the prized trophy to captain Rodri, FIFA President Gianni Infantino sprinted to the other side, possibly trying to pull Trump away from the frame. But the US President decided to stay as Rodri lifted the trophy and the entire team erupted in jubilation.
After the video of the entire incident went viral, Martina Navratilova dropped a two-word response to condemn Trump’s act and wrote on X:
“Effing moron.”
The Spanish football team decided to crop the US President out of their World Cup-winning photo. In the picture uploaded by the Spanish Football Federation, Trump was nowhere to be seen.
Martina Navratilova, a consistent critic of US President Donald Trump
Martina Navratilova, an 18-time singles Grand Slam champion, has been critical of US President Trump in the past few years. The Czech-American tennis player became a US citizen in 1981 by naturalisation, six years after leaving her home country.
She fled from communist Czechoslovakia in 1975 at age 18 because she feared the regime would restrict her tennis career. She has lambasted Trump’s administration and joined protests against government policies.
During the knockout stage of the World Cup, Navratilova didn’t shy away from expressing her amusement at fans trolling Trump after Belgium sent the US packing from the tournament. Before the fixture, the US President claimed that he had made a few calls to overturn Folarin Balogun’s red card.
FIFA overturned the one-match ban imposed on the American striker, making him available for the Round of 16 clash. Trump was heavily criticised for his political interference before the fixture, and it only intensified after the result. Belgium thrashed the US 4-1 to progress into the quarter-finals. As memes flooded social media, Martina Navratilova wrote “LOL” to express her amusement about Trump getting heavily trolled.
