It is very rare in football nowadays that a story makes you stop in your tracks and think wow. Arsenal‘s pursuit of Vinicius Junior did exactly that.
The news broke on Saturday afternoon that the Gunners are exploring a deal and it made supporters of the club the world over gasp in shock.
The deal may not happen and a move is in the very early stages of being looked at but there is a genuine belief that they could entice him away from Real Madrid.
The Brazilian’s deal at the Bernabeu expires in a year and with Real looking to close out a deal for RB Leipzig’s Yan Diomande, it suggests they are preparing for Vini’s exit. Arsenal are hopeful of being in the driver’s seat to secure his signature if he does leave Spain behind.
Why Vinicius Junior could be so transformative for Arsenal
For so long it has felt as though Arsenal have needed a genuine superstar to compete with the likes of Manchester City and Liverpool.
Sure, they won the Premier League last season, but they have lacked an Erling Haaland or Mohamed Salah type figure to really carry them through certain games when the going gets tough.
As City won the title in 2023/24, Haaland bagged 27 goals in 31 league outings. As Liverpool won it in 2024/25, Salah found the net on 29 occasions in 38 matches. Arsenal, on the other hand, well their league top scorer was Viktor Gyokeres with 14 in 2025/26. It rather says it all.
The Gunners were certainly no mugs in attack last season but they did win 11 games by a scoreline of 1-0 and they set a record for the most goals scored from corners in a single Premier League season with 19.
So, they need to find a player capable of breaking down low blocks. They need a player capable of creating and scoring from out of nowhere. They need their own Haaland, their own Salah. Vini Jr would be exactly that.
While Arsenal’s forward players have struggled for consistency in recent years, the Brazilian hero has certainly not. The 26-year-old scored 22 goals last term and assisted ten and has had a habit of producing regular goal involvements. That was his fifth consecutive term in which Vinicius has scored over 20 times.

As the numbers highlight, he’s an elite forward player, someone who is always in the conversation to win the Ballon d’Or. He’d be a totally transformative addition in the final third. This is the player who can really take the Gunners to the next level.
However, he is not the only one.
Why Arsenal must sign £130m star alongside Vini
If Arsenal want to build a dynasty under Arteta they should not stop at just the Brazilian. He would be a remarkable signing by Andrea Berta and Co but he must not be the only remaining addition to the forward line, even if they did confirm the arrival of Christos Tzolis last Thursday.
Alongside Tzolis and Vinicius Junior, the Gunners have looked at plenty of names from the aforementioned Diomande to PSG’s Bradley Barcola.
The feeling right now, however, is that Barcola will stay in Paris and that Diomande will head to Real Madrid, potentially as the chosen replacement for Vini. Should that move get done then it may well free up Arsenal to finalise a swoop for the Brazilian icon.
Arteta’s attack, however, could be truly transformed with the arrival of not just him but another South American in the form of Julian Alvarez.
Arsenal’s interest in the Argentine has been no secret this summer and according to TEAMtalk, they are positioning themselves to make a bid. Berta is in direct talks with the forward’s camp and there is a confidence that personal terms will be agreed. That said, they need to overcome one obstacle; he wants to join Barcelona and he is likely to cost £130m or even more.
That said, if Arsenal were able to complete a move for the Atletico Madrid star alongside Vini, their XI would finally look complete.
They have the best defensive in Europe, they have Declan Rice fronting the midfield and if you combined that all with an attacking trio of Bukayo Saka, Alvarez and Vinicius Junior, you would have arguably the finest team in Europe, a side ready to win the Champions League.
Why? Well, we’ve outlined just how creative and how dangerous Vini can be from the flanks. Combine that with Alvarez and you would have a menacing forward line.
There are very few better strikers in the world right now than Alvarez and there are very few better at linking and connecting the play than him. The 2022 World Cup winner may well have scored 29 goals during his debut year with Atleti and added another 20 to his tally last term but he’s also a fine creator.
Versatile, he can play as the main striker or slightly further back as a number 10/second striker. This means he is exceptional at bringing others into play, ranking among the finest 9% of positionally similar players in Europe’s top five leagues for expected threat in the build-up phases of play last season.
Expected Threat (xT) is a metric that quantifies how much a player’s actions (like a pass or carry) increase their team’s probability of scoring.
Alvarez also ranked among the top 6% of strikers for big chances created in open play. This would be a dream for any wide player in football, let alone Vini Jr, one of the best wingers in world football.
To have a selfless yet ruthless centre-forward alongside him in the form of Alvarez would be a match made in heaven. Arsenal’s attack could go from one of the most frustrating around to one of the most dangerous in no time at all.
