Napoli have made a bid for Chelsea defender Benoit Badiashile, and there are reasons that all parties could seriously benefit from a deal.
Badiashile arrived at Chelsea with a reputation as one of Europe’s most promising young centre-backs, but almost four years later, his Stamford Bridge career appears to be approaching its conclusion.
Chelsea paid around £35 million to sign the French defender from Monaco in January 2023 after he had established himself as one of Ligue 1’s standout young defenders and broken into the senior France squad.
Tall, composed in possession and comfortable playing out from the back, Badiashile looked like the ideal long-term investment for a club rebuilding with young talent.
Badiashile adapted quickly to Premier League football and produced a string of assured displays during his first few months in England, with many believing Chelsea had secured one of the league’s brightest defensive prospects.
However, injuries repeatedly interrupted that momentum.
Hamstring problems and other fitness setbacks prevented the 25-year-old from establishing himself as a sure-fire starter, while constant managerial changes also made consistency difficult.
Despite making more than 70 appearances in all competitions for Chelsea, Badiashile has regularly found himself competing with Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana, Trevoh Chalobah and Tosin Adarabioyo for minutes.
With Chelsea also signing Maxence Lacroix, and 10 centre-backs now on the books, Badiashile is likely to make way.
A move away would also offer the defender the chance to rebuild his career with regular first-team football, and Napoli have now emerged as one of the strongest contenders.
The Serie A side have been forced back into the market after injuries to Alessandro Buongiorno and Sam Beukema significantly weakened their defensive options.
With Amir Rrahmani currently the only experienced senior centre-back fully available, sporting director Giovanni Manna has prioritised adding another proven defender before the new campaign begins.
Napoli make offer to Chelsea for Benoit Badiashile
According to Italian journalist Raffaele Auriemma, Napoli have already made their move, with the club holding an ‘urgent’ need for an ‘experienced defender’.
Manna has presented Chelsea with an offer worth £15 million for Badiashile. He backs claims that Napoli’s recent injury problems have accelerated their search for new defenders, making the Frenchman one of their leading targets despite previous public suggestions that outgoings would need to come before new arrivals.
Whether Chelsea accept the opening bid remains to be seen.
The Blues invested significantly to bring Badiashile to England and may hope to recover a larger proportion of that fee, particularly given his age and the length of his contract.
They are not under immediate pressure to sell, although a major defensive reshuffle under Xabi Alonso means a fair few departures are expected before the transfer window closes.
For Badiashile himself, Serie A could represent an ideal opportunity.
Italian football has often suited technically gifted central defenders, and a fresh environment could allow him to rediscover the form that first persuaded Chelsea to bring him to the Premier League.
Napoli clearly believe he possesses the experience and quality required to strengthen a defence currently dealing with significant injury problems.
Chelsea must now decide whether Auriemma’s reported offer is enough to begin serious negotiations.
