The role of a central defender has changed over time, with those at the very top now not just world-class in the air and in a tackle, but also brilliant in possession with the ball at their feet.
The new generation of centre-backs are crucial to their team’s build-up play and, in some cases, pass more than most midfielders, but who is the best in the world at the back at this moment in time?
Ranking factors
To help rank the centre-backs in order, we have considered the following criteria:
- Current form – how well a player has been performing
- Importance to their teams – how influential they are to their team
- Role – how unique their skillset is
- Reputation – what others are saying about them
Here’s a detailed run-down of how the top ten shapes up with a fully 1-20 ranked at the bottom…

Dean Huijsen
Real Madrid and Spain
One of the most in-demand defenders of the 2025 summer transfer window was Dean Huijsen, with Real Madrid winning the race to sign the Spaniard from AFC Bournemouth.
Wanted all across Europe, Huijsen starred in the Premier League after leaving Juventus and Tiago Pinto even said he “will be the best central defender in the world in two years”.

Antonio Rudiger
Real Madrid and Germany
Former Chelsea star Rudiger has found a new lease on life at Real Madrid, winning both La Liga and the Champions League during his time in the Spanish capital.
The Germany international is one of very few players in history to win Europe’s elite competition with two different clubs as well as the Europa League.
Now 33 years of age, he continues to be one of the standout centre-backs in world football courtesy of his elite ability on the ball and physicality.
8
Marc Guehi
Manchester City and England
Marc Guehi became one of the most in-demand centre-backs in world football after his move to Liverpool from Crystal Palace collapsed in the summer of 2025.
Now a regular for England and having moved to Man City, Guehi is without a doubt the best English centre-half around.
He’s enjoyed a remarkable last 12 months, lifting the FA Cup and Community Shield with Crystal Palace in 2025 before his move to the Etihad.

Willian Pacho
PSG and Ecuador
Willian Pacho has gone from strength to strength after joining PSG from Frankfurt in 2024 and now appears to be a regular at the Parc des Princes.
The Ecuador international is still only 24 years of age and has been described as the ‘wall nobody saw coming’ next to Marquinhos.
The €40m fee PSG paid for Pacho is now looking like a smart piece of business, with the player’s market value already increasing significantly in France.

Virgil van Dijk
Liverpool and Netherlands
Third in the charts is Virgil van Dijk. The Liverpool star has been at the top for some time now and is showing very few signs of slowing down at the age of 35.
The Dutchman signed a new Reds deal to keep him at Anfield until 2027, with Van Dijk playing a key role in helping Liverpool win the Premier League.
Jamie Carragher has called Van Dijk “the best centre-back we’ve ever seen in the Premier League” this season, whereas Michael Owen has dubbed him “the best centre-half of all time”. A conversation is there to be had about Van Dijk being one of the best of all time, but that is for another day.

Marquinhos
PSG and Brazil
Paris Saint-Germain icon Marquinhos has been leading a new generation of stars at the Parc des Princes under Luis Enrique and has still remained at an extremely high level himself.
Now in his 30s, Marquinhos continues to be a regular in a young PSG side and even became the first player in the club’s history to start 100 matches for PSG in the Champions League.

Alessandro Bastoni
Inter Milan and Italy
Known as a playmaking centre-back who is extremely comfortable on the ball, Alessandro Bastoni is getting better and better at Inter Milan, with legendary defender Giorgio Chiellini calling him “the best at the moment” at the back. It’s hard to dispute that with Barcelona now reportedly chasing him ahead of a summer move in 2026.
Chiellini said, “On a technical level, there are few at his level in the world. He is evolving and interpreting the new evolution of football.” High praise indeed from one of the best ever, and Bastoni helped Inter Milan to the Champions League final.
3
Gabriel Magalhaes
Arsenal and Brazil
Partnering Williams Saliba at the back for Arsenal has been Gabriel Magalhaes, who has been making a name for himself as a goalscoring centre-back at the Emirates, having an aura around him at set-pieces.
Mikel Arteta called Gabriel’s performances for the Gunners in the 2024/25 season “undeniable” and “have taken him to a different level” in north London, with the Brazilian one of the best centre-backs in the world throughout 2025/26 with Arsenal competing on multiple fronts for major honours.
Gabriel appears to be in his prime and will be desperate to add some more silverware to his collection over the coming years. He’s certainly one of the best in the business right now and capped things off in 2026 with a Premier League title.

William Saliba
Arsenal and France
Still only in his mid 20s, it feels as if Saliba will soon come into the prime of his career, and he has been a star for Arsenal in recent seasons under Arteta.
The Frenchman doesn’t lack confidence either, stating himself that he is “one of the best” around right now. Iconic centre-back Rio Ferdinand also loves Saliba, saying he is “going to be the best defender in the world” and has “everything you’d want in a centre half”. Well, in the present day, he looks like he’s already there.

Pau Cubarsi
Barcelona and Spain
One of the latest La Masia graduates who has turned into a first-team star at Barcelona is Pau Cubarsi.
Making more than 50 appearances in 2024/25, Hansi Flick has said what “Cubarsi is doing is just as crazy as Lamine Yamal”, and it looks as if he’ll go from strength to strength over the coming years.
Indeed, he proved as much during Spain’s triumphant World Cup campaign in 2026 when he won the Young Player of the Tournament award. Not bad for a defender, eh? He certainly feels like the best central defender around right now.
