Christian McCaffrey’s “tightness” injury linked to contract hold-in conspiracy by Mike Florio amid Bijan Robinson, Jahmyr Gibbs massive extensions

Christian McCaffrey is said to be being held back from practicing with the San Francisco 49ers by an injury that can only be described as “tightness”. However, Mike Florio believes this is not the case, and the actual reason covers a completely different matter.

On Monday’s episode of “Pro Football Talk Live”, the NBC sportscaster insinuated that the star running back was instead holding out for financial reasons after seeing a pair of younger peers receive record-breaking deals within days of each other:

“Bijan Robinson gets a big contract. A couple of days later, Jahmyr Gibbs gets a big contract. A couple of days later Christian McCaffrey starts missing practice due to “tightness”. Now he’s missed a week of practice and some are wondering whether or not his tightness, his absences from practice relate to a desire to get an adjustment to his contract.”

McCaffrey has been the NFL’s highest-paid running back twice.

The first instance came in 2021, when he received a four-year, $64-million extension from the Carolina Panthers. The 49ers inherited that contract when they traded for him in the middle of the 2022 season.

In 2024, coming off winning Offensive Player of the Year and leading the 49ers to their second Super Bowl appearance under the Kyle Shanahan-John Lynch regime, he agreed to a two-year, $38-million extension that would keep him under contract until the end of the 2027 season.

49ers HC Kyle Shanahan recently downplayed gravity of Christian McCaffrey’s absences from practice

Speaking of Kyle Shanahan, he is one person who is not completely bothered by the narratives surrounding Christian McCaffrey‘s status. During practice last Tuesday, he said:

“My concern would be him toughing through tightness, like a lot of people do, and then hurting something bad, and then pulling something, which then, it could be a month. … But we’re pretty confident in what he’s done before, in what he’s done these two weeks, and we just want to make sure we don’t make it something to be concerned about.”

The 49ers’ season begins in Melbourne against the divisional/intrastate rival Los Angeles Rams on September 10/11. Kickoff is at 5:35 p.m. ET/10:35 am AET.
