Commanders WR Terry McLaurin addresses potential Stefon Diggs competition

The Washington Commanders created an intriguing dynamic when they placed Stefon Diggs alongside Terry McLaurin in their receiving corps. Two accomplished veterans now share one offense, potentially creating some healthy competition for targets and recognition.

McLaurin does not appear threatened by the new arrangement. If anything, he sees Diggs as someone capable of pushing him to become an even better player.

Terry McLaurin compares himself to Stefon Diggs

During an appearance on the Commanders’ “Next Man Up,” McLaurin offered a colorful description of his early relationship with Diggs. The similarities apparently became obvious once the two receivers started working together.

“I kind of think of that Spider-Man meme where they’re both pointing at each other,” McLaurin said. “We’re the same guy on the field.”

McLaurin explained that both receivers bring passion, leadership and considerable energy to the offense. Neither player has built a career by quietly blending into the background.

Diggs has earned four Pro Bowl selections and one first-team All-Pro honor during his career. McLaurin has made the Pro Bowl twice while consistently producing despite Washington’s revolving door at quarterback.

Putting those personalities together could have created a struggle over status. McLaurin instead believes Diggs has provided another standard against which he can evaluate himself.

“Having a guy who’s like-minded like that, who’s played at the highest level, who’s been All Pro, Pro Bowl and played in the biggest situations, that helps me to measure myself up to where I am in my game,” McLaurin said. “I’m an elite player as well.”

That last sentence was not accidental. McLaurin respects everything Diggs has accomplished, but he is not surrendering his place atop Washington’s receiving hierarchy.
