Team India mystery spinner Varun Chakravarthy has reportedly sustained another injury that will rule him out of the remainder of the ongoing T20I series against Afghanistan. The 35-year-old recently made a comeback after sustaining a hamstring injury during the T20I series against England in July.
Varun Chakravarthy was not a part of the tour of Zimbabwe as he was among the several players recuperating at the Centre of Excellence (CoE). He regained his fitness well before the Afghanistan series and was named in the squad for the three-match affair, without his participation being subject to fitness.
The mystery spinner made an impact on his comeback, bowling a tidy spell of 1-16 off his four overs in the series opener at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Sunday, September 13. He castled Darwish Rasooli with a sublime delivery, and was the most economical bowler of the match.
According to a report by Dainik Jagran, Varun Chakravarthy’s return has been cut short due to yet another injury that will force him to miss the remaining two matches.
“Varun Chakravarthy got injured after playing just one match. Indian spinner ruled out of the Afghanistan series. Serious questions raised about the Centre of Excellence. After the England series, Varun took the field here and got injured after playing just one match,” the update mentions.
Team India have other spin bowling resources like Washington Sundar and Ravi Bishnoi to cover for Varun Chakravarthy’s absence for the remainder of the series. It remains to be seen whether the recent injury impacts the mystery spinner’s availability for the upcoming Asian Games 2026.
Varun Chakravarthy has been riddled with injuries since the end of the T20 World Cup 2026
The Tamil Nadu spinner’s first set of injuries took place during the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). He hurt his finger while taking a catch and then also suffered a toe fracture later in the campaign.
The injuries forced Varun Chakravarthy to miss the tour of Ireland, but he recovered in time for the England tour. He was part of the playing XI for the first three matches of the series, and was ruled out of the latter matches due to an injury he sustained during the 125-run loss at Trent Bridge, Nottingham.
