Jaxson Dart’s season is over, and the New York Giants are scanning the veteran market for another quarterback. One of the names gaining traction is Jimmy Garoppolo, a two-time Super Bowl winner who has started just one game since 2023.
Dart tore the MCL and PCL and damaged the meniscus in his left knee during Monday’s 28-6 loss at the Rams. Jameis Winston, signed through 2028 on a two-year, $13 million extension completed before Week 1, will start. Jake Haener is the only other quarterback under contract and spent the opening weeks on the practice squad.
That leaves little margin if Winston falters or gets hurt.
Garoppolo, 34, is still a free agent after two seasons behind Matthew Stafford in Los Angeles. He attempted his most recent passes in a Week 18 start against Seattle to close the 2024 season, going 27 of 41 for 334 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He appeared in three games last season, but did not attempt a pass.
New England drafted Jimmy G in the second round in 2014. He collected championship rings as Tom Brady’s backup, then started Super Bowl LIV for San Francisco. He is 43-21 as a starter and has completed 67.4 percent of his career attempts for 15,828 yards and 96 touchdowns.
Ryan Dunleavy of the New York Post reports that New York’s interest has sharpened and that Garoppolo is among the first names under discussion. NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo said the Giants are one of the few teams the quarterback would seriously consider after he passed on returning to the Rams and briefly weighed retirement.
