Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Olympique Lyonnais midfielder Tyler Morton, as per Football Insider.
The Reds won the Premier League title under Arne Slot’s guidance during the 2024/25 campaign. But they struggled to continue the momentum last season.
As a result, Liverpool decided to part ways with the Dutchman this summer, and Andoni Iraola has been appointed as the new manager. He displayed his tactical nous at AFC Bournemouth over the last few years.
The Merseyside club have had a mixed start this season, sitting sixth in the Premier League table with nine points from five matches. Manchester City are currently the league leaders, having won all five encounters.
Now, Football Insider state that Liverpool are considering reinforcing the midfield department next year and have identified Morton as a serious option.
They have been monitoring his development closely before making a potential swoop. However, Lyon have no intention of letting him leave, with his existing deal set to run until 2030.
Morton is a 6ft 1in tall right-footed deep-lying playmaker but can provide cover in the box-to-box role if needed. He is technically sound, can play threading passes between the lines, has an eye for long-range passing, and is efficient in defensive contributions.
Morton to Liverpool
After coming through Liverpool’s youth system, the 23-year-old struggled to break into the starting line-up. So, he went out on loan on a couple of occasions before joining Lyon permanently last year and has shown glimpses of his qualities in Ligue 1.
Despite selling Curtis Jones to Inter Milan this summer, Liverpool decided not to strengthen the engine room. So, they currently have Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Trey Nyoni as deeper midfield options.
Wataru Endo can also provide cover in this position if needed but has struggled to find regular game time in recent seasons. So, Liverpool could do with signing a new midfielder.
Morton, valued at around £26m by Transfermarkt, is a talented player and possesses high potential. Therefore, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Liverpool should they purchase him.
However, it remains to be seen whether the Anfield club will eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services in January or next summer.
