Why Sanju Samson, Why? You Are Not Doing Justice to Your Extraordinary Talent

Sanju Samson once again showed why he is considered one of the most naturally gifted batters in world cricket. His stunning knock of 82 runs from just 41 balls against the West Indies was a reminder of his extraordinary batting ability. The timing, effortless strokeplay and variety of shots were enough to leave cricket fans amazed. Watching Samson at his best, it genuinely feels like he was born to rule world cricket.

However, the same innings raises a frustrating question. Why Sanju Samson, why are you not doing justice to your extraordinary talent?

There is hardly any doubt about Samson’s batting ability. He has the technique, timing and range of shots to dominate even the best bowling attacks. On his day, he makes batting look ridiculously easy. But when we look at his overall career, one problem continues to hold him back: inconsistency.

Sanju Samson Was Just One Catch Away From Another Failure

Samson’s brilliant innings against the West Indies could have ended before it even began. He received an early lifeline when a catch was dropped while he was batting on just six. Another opportunity went begging when he had reached 41.

Had the first catch been taken, Samson would have suffered another disappointing outing after a series of poor performances.

It would have been his fifth consecutive unsuccessful innings, including four single-digit scores during that period. His place in the playing XI could have come under serious pressure, especially with an exciting young talent like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi waiting for opportunities.

Instead, Samson made the most of those chances and produced a breathtaking innings.

But that is exactly what makes his career so frustrating. A player with such remarkable ability should not have to depend on dropped catches to rediscover his form.

Sanju Samson Has the Talent to Rule World Cricket

When Samson is in full flow, very few batters look as comfortable at the crease. He seems to have plenty of time to play his shots, even against quality bowling.

His ability to find boundaries without appearing to take unnecessary risks makes him a special talent.

Samson possesses the natural batting ability to have become one of the finest T20 batters in the world. With greater consistency, he could arguably have maintained a much higher batting average and established himself among the most dependable players in the format.

However, his tendency to play questionable shots at crucial moments has repeatedly damaged his chances.

Another concern has been his struggles on two-paced surfaces, where the ball does not always come onto the bat consistently. Such conditions have occasionally exposed weaknesses in his approach.

These issues have prevented Samson from achieving the level of consistency that his talent deserves.

Sanju Samson’s World Cup Heroics Make His Inconsistency Even More Frustrating

The biggest reason behind these expectations is what Samson achieved during the 2026 T20 World Cup.

At one stage, he was not even a regular member of India’s playing XI. However, when the opportunity arrived, he delivered three extraordinary performances in India’s most important matches.

He scored an unbeaten 97 against the West Indies in a virtual quarter-final, followed by 89 against England in the semi-final and another 89 against New Zealand in the final.

Samson became one of India’s biggest match-winners during their successful World Cup campaign and was named Player of the Tournament.

Those performances proved that he could deliver consistently even under enormous pressure.

Yet his form dipped again after the tournament, raising familiar questions about why he struggles to maintain the same standards over longer periods.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Is Waiting for His Opportunity

The competition for places in India’s T20I team is another reason Samson cannot afford prolonged periods of poor form.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is among the most exciting young batting talents in Indian cricket, and his presence has increased the discussion around Samson’s position.

Before his latest innings, Samson had scored just 11 runs against the West Indies in the series opener. His struggles had already sparked debate about whether India should consider other options.

If Samson continues to struggle, the pressure to give Sooryavanshi an opportunity could grow. However, his brilliant 82 has once again strengthened his case for continued selection.

The real challenge is to ensure that this innings becomes the beginning of a consistent run rather than another isolated performance.

Samson has already shown that he possesses the talent to become one of the best T20 batters in the world. What he needs now is greater control over his shot selection and the ability to deliver on difficult batting surfaces.

Because the biggest disappointment would not be seeing Sanju Samson fail in a few matches. It would be seeing a player with such extraordinary talent finish his career without ever reaching his true potential.
