  • Angel Reese disregards heavy criticism from fans about her “fake” double-double streak

Angel Reese disregards heavy criticism from fans about her “fake” double-double streak

The Chicago Sky suffered a painful loss on Sunday, falling to the Las Vegas Aces on a buzzer-beater courtesy of A’ja Wilson. The only silver lining for the Sky was Angel Reese bringing down 22 rebounds, marking the third straight game in which she’s grabbed at least 20. She’s the only WNBA player in history to accomplish that.

Despite the impressive string of performances to continue a fantastic rookie season, Reese continues to garner criticism from fans. The reason? Her low field goal percentage, which in turn leads to a lot of offensive rebounds.

Fans are using it as a way to discredit her big-time rebounding performances.

Angel Reese responds to haters following Sky’s loss to Aces

Reese absolutely deserves credit for her ability to rebound, both offensively and defensively. She plays a position where that is arguably her main responsibility. She may be getting a lot of offensive rebounds because she misses, but she’s still boxing out and getting those rebounds, which instead would be going to the other team.

Reese responded to the criticism in classic fashion.

The Sky have lost three straight games and are on the edge of the WNBA playoff picture. They play the Washington Mystics next.

The rumor that Angel Reese and Kevin Durant are dating just won't go away: Are they a couple?

As the Paris Olympics 2024 continues to draw global interest, speculation has arisen around Kevin Durant and Angel Reese, suggesting a possible romantic connection between the NBA superstar and the Chicago Sky player. This buzz began when Durant and Reese were spotted together at a Team USA Women’s Basketball exhibition game against Germany.

They sat beside each other during the game at the O2 Arena in London, where Team USA claimed an 84-57 victory. The rumors were further fueled by the presence of Stephen Curry and his wife, Ayesha, who attended the game with them, hinting at potential double dates.

    No comment on rumors

Despite the growing curiosity, neither Durant nor Reese has commented publicly on the rumors. Durant has not had a public relationship since his split from former WNBA player Monica Wright in 2014.

Reese, on the other hand, recently confirmed her single status after ending her nearly year-long relationship with Cam’ron Fletcher earlier this year, as she announced during an Instagram live session in late March 2024.

Reese has previously expressed admiration for Durant ahead of the 2024 NBA Draft, when she named him as her preferred 2v2 coed basketball partner, citing him as her favorite player and appreciating his roots in the Washington Metropolitan Area (DMV).

She has mentioned that Durant’s career and skills have been an inspiration for her own basketball journey.

The star of the show on the court was the Las Vegas Aces’ A’ja Wilson who posted a double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds, while Olympic veteran Breanna Stewart of the Liberty contributed 15 points, six rebounds and five assists.

“We need to continue to make sure our starts in the third get better every single game,” said U.S. forward Stewart. “It’s a tune-up game. We don’t want to peak too soon.”

It was thankfully a much smoother night for Reese than the WNBA All-Star game where she had a distressing incident with a fan.

The video, which garnered over 1 million views within just seven hours, captured the fan screaming at Reese while being escorted out. Reese makes a brief appearance in the footage, looking visibly concerned but composed.

  • Angel Reese finds a new way to dominate WNBA by hitting first-ever three-pointer

Angel Reese finds a new way to dominate WNBA by hitting first-ever three-pointer

Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese has carved out yet another milestone for herself. Known affectionately as the “Chi Barbie,” Reese has already turned heads this season, but on Friday night, she gave the fans something to really talk about.

The former LSU Tiger, who just last week earned her spot on the WNBA All-Star roster and set a league record for the most consecutive double-doubles with 11, added a new feather to her cap. Facing the Seattle Storm, Reese etched her name into a different kind of history book: she nailed her first-ever three-pointer in the WNBA.

As the final seconds of the second quarter ticked away, the tension in the air was palpable. Reese, not particularly known for her shooting beyond the arc, found herself in uncharted territory. But with a flick of her wrist, the ball soared, and the crowd erupted. It was a beautiful moment of synchronicity-Reese’s shot sailed through the hoop, and the arena’s decibel levels hit the roof.

    Angel Reese’s first three-pointer makes a statement

For Reese, this was more than just a basket. It was a statement. The fans knew it, too. The social media sphere lit up like a Christmas tree. “THATS OUR ROOKIE!!!” exclaimed one X user in reply to the WNBA’s post about the monumental shot. Another chimed in, “Reese with 16 points, 6 rebounds, 2 blocks in 17 minutes of the first half. She balling!” And the sentiment was perhaps best captured by a third fan who declared, “ANGEL ROTY IS SECURED.”

In a league often dominated by the long-range sharpshooting of stars like Caitlin Clark, Reese’s accomplishment is a refreshing twist. She’s not just breaking records; she’s breaking expectations. And that three-pointer? It might just be the first of many to come.

Angel Reese’s journey this season has been nothing short of spectacular. Her ability to adapt and evolve is a testament to her relentless work ethic and undeniable talent. With each game, she continues to redefine what it means to be a rookie in the WNBA.

  • Angel Reese comes up with an ingenious and endearing nickname for her growing WNBA fanbse

Angel Reese comes up with an ingenious and endearing nickname for her growing WNBA fanbse

Angel Reese has quickly captivated WNBA and Chicago Sky fans, endearing herself to them as a hard-working rookie with elite rebounding skills and a motor that never stops running. Now, she wants to repay Sky fans for their support.

Fresh off a career-high 25 points against rival Caitlin Clark and her Indiana Fever, Reese is getting better and better with each passing game as she carves out a place amongst fierce competition in the WNBA. Some of Reese’s fans have been with her since her LSU days — and she has christened them anew with a charming nickname.

    Reese salutes her “pieces”

In a viral tweet on Tuesday, Reese asked where her “Reese’s Pieces” were — the nickname she has assigned her loyal fans, and a play on her last name as well as the famous peanut butter candy manufactured by Hershey.

The roll call prompted a wave of responses on Twitter/X as Reese rallied her fans for the games ahead. The 6-9 Sky are in possession of the WNBA’s eighth and final playoff spot, and Chicago has nine games between now and the Olympic break in mid-July — with the first game in that stretch taking place at Wintrust Arena on Thursday night against the defending champion Las Vegas Aces.

Reese will no doubt relish a matchup with reigning MVP A’ja Wilson and her Aces, as it gives the rookie a chance to continue an impressive streak. Reese has posted eight consecutive points-rebounds double-doubles — a league record for a first-year player — and she has shot better than 50 percent from the floor in consecutive games.

Reese and Kamilla Cardoso — her one-time college rival — represent the Sky’s future as the franchise hopes to return to championship contention in the next few years. Continuing to cultivate and energize the fanbase supporting her is another smart move from Reese as she continues to expand her game.

  • Angel Reese defended by Chicago Sky coach as she rips reporter over Team USA question

Angel Reese defended by Chicago Sky coach as she rips reporter over Team USA question

In a recent press conference, tensions ran high as Chicago Sky head coach Teresa Weatherspoon took offense to a seemingly innocuous question regarding the future prospects of forward Angel Reese in Team USA selections. The incident unfolded when a reporter probed into Reese‘s potential for national team representation, a query that sparked a fiery response from Weatherspoon.

“Come on now, I know you’re not asking me that question,” retorted Weatherspoon, clearly agitated by the line of questioning. “Does she have what it takes? She’s showing it… She has what it takes. You’re doggone right she has what it takes.”

Weatherspoon‘s impassioned defense of Reese and other players on the Sky roster underscored a broader narrative surrounding media scrutiny and expectations within the WNBA. The league, often overshadowed in mainstream sports media, has recently seen increased attention due to rising stars like Caitlin Clark, whose absence from the recent Olympic team selection sparked debate and critique.

The WNBA lashing out at the media of late

The WNBA, long battling for visibility and respect, has faced criticism for its perceived sensitivity to media coverage compared to its NBA counterpart. Weatherspoon’s outburst and the subsequent backlash from players like Chennedy Carter highlight a growing frustration among WNBA personnel with what they perceive as unfair scrutiny and comparisons to more established leagues.

Angel Reese’s earlier fine for skipping a mandatory media session further underscores the tensions within the league, particularly as it navigates heightened media interest and the pressures of representing a sport seeking broader recognition.

As new fans continue to discover the WNBA through high-profile players and controversies, questions persist about the league’s future direction and its handling of media relations. The debate over entitlement versus advocacy for fair treatment remains a central theme in discussions surrounding women’s professional basketball, as the sport seeks to carve out a more prominent place in the sporting landscape.

  • Angel Reese triumphs in her first showdown with WNBA referees

Angel Reese triumphs in her first showdown with WNBA referees

The start of Angel Reese‘s WNBA career has had ups and downs. Through eight games, the Chicago Sky‘s new star has struggled to shoot the ball (34 percent field-goal accuracy), but her nine rebounds per game are a team-leading average and the seventh-highest mark in the league so far.

Reese had another one of those “Jekyll and Hyde” performances in Chicago‘s most recent game, at home against the New York Liberty. The Sky fought hard and even took the lead in the third quarter, but the Liberty pulled away late to win 88-75 — and Reese suffered her first career ejection late in the fourth quarter. However, an unexpected development following the game has painted Reese in a different light.

The WNBA rescinds Reese’s second tech

The WNBA on Wednesday announced that it had decided to strike Reese’s second techincal foul from the record of Tuesday night’s game. This halves Reese’s fine from the league, reducing it from $400 to $200 — meaning Chicago Bulls guard Lonzo Ball, who pledged to pay Reese’s fine, owes the WNBA a little bit less.

Reese had been tossed from Tuesday night’s game after waving off official Charles Watson — who had assigned her the initial technical foul (which still stands) after she “disrespectfully addressed” him once she was whistled for her fifth personal foul with 2:31 to go. The WNBA rescinding the second tech means the league clearly did not buy Tuesday night’s explanation from lead official Maj Forsberg, which attempted to justify Reese’s ejection.

This small victory for Reese is a victory nonetheless. Even though she is already worth millions of dollars thanks to various endorsements and sponsorships, Reese would not have wanted to cultivate a repuation as a difficult and combative player so early in her career — and Sky coach Teresa Weatherspoon will undoubtedly remind her to toe the line a bit more carefully in the future.

  • Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky coach's harsh criticism after her WNBA debut

Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky coach's harsh criticism after her WNBA debut

After a tough game against the Seattle Storm on Tuesday, Chicago Sky coach Teresa Weatherspoon shared her thoughts on Angel Reese‘s contribution. Even though the Sky lost 77-68, Reese stood out by achieving her first professional double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.

This milestone makes her just the second player in Sky history to record a double-double within their first five games.

Angel Reese inpires as role model for Dwyane Wade’s daughters

Weatherspoon discussed about Reese‘s determination and the intensity she brings to every game during her postgame comments.

    “She’s a competitor. That’s it,” Weatherspoon said.

“She wants to compete and she does it. She knows everyone sees her as a rookie, but she just sees herself as a player.”

Reese‘s fearless attitude and consistent effort are evident on the court. Despite any struggles she may face, fans can always expect her to give maximum effort.

    Outstanding rookies

Reese is second in rookie scoring, averaging 12 points per game, and leads with 8.6 rebounds per game. She also became the third player in WNBA history to achieve 15 offensive rebounds in her first three games.

Cameron Brink, meanwhile, shows promise to potentially surpass both Reese and Caitlin Clark. Currently, Brink leads the WNBA in blocks per game with three, while also averaging 9.5 points and 5.3 rebounds.

Her versatility makes her a formidable opponent and a dark horse in the Rookie of the Year race. Additionally, No. 3 overall pick Kamilla Cardoso is set to make her debut against the Fever after missing three weeks due to a shoulder injury.
