  • Liverpool monitoring how Rice ‘reacts to big-game pressure’ amid ‘falling’ West Ham price tag

Liverpool monitoring how Rice ‘reacts to big-game pressure’ amid ‘falling’ West Ham price tag

Liverpool are curious to see if England midfielder Declan Rice can thrive at the World Cup ahead of a possible summer move from West Ham, according to reports.

The 23-year-old has been in brilliant form over the past few seasons for the Hammers with several Premier League clubs reportedly taking an interest in his services.

Liverpool are one of those, with the Reds desperate to add a quality midfielder to their starting line-up in time for next season after their inconsistent displays this campaign.

The Reds brought in Arthur on a season-long loan deal from Juventus on transfer deadline day after it became clear that they needed reinforcements in that area.

However, the Brazilian is already injured and it already seems very unlikely that Liverpool will make the deal permanent next summer.

Jurgen Klopp’s recruitment team are reportedly saving themselves for a big summer move for either Rice or England team-mate Jude Bellingham.

And now Football Insider claims that Liverpool are ‘closely monitoring’ Rice during international duty to see ‘how he reacts to the big-game World Cup pressure’.

Liverpool want ‘a marquee midfield signing’ with Bellingham also ‘a top target’ this summer but the Reds ‘also have a strong interest in Rice amid the likelihood there will be slightly less elite-club competition for his signature’.

    Football Insider add:

‘One intriguing area will be how Rice copes with the type of scrutiny and huge-game pressure he does not get at West Ham, who do not compete in the Champions League or challenge for trophies.

‘Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is a “huge” admirer of the Chelsea academy product and believes he would be a perfect fit for his team.’

Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero recently hailed Rice as on the “same level” as Sergio Busquets, Rodri and Casemiro.

“For me he is a great player and is at the same level as the best midfielders like Busquets, Rodri and Casemiro,”Aguero said of Rice in an interview with Stake.

“It seems to me that he is valued. What happens is that with him not being in a ‘Big Six’ team, he does not get talked about as much.

“But he has proven himself and I think he is one of the strengths of the England team at the World Cup.”

While Bournemouth caretaker boss Gary O’Neil reckons the West Ham midfielder is unparalleled amongst English midfielders.

“He’s a fantastic player, has so many strengths for a midfield player, probably the best all-around English midfielder we have. I haven’t put too much thought into that, but I think he’s right up there.

“He has real physical qualities, he can get box-to-box, good legs, good strength, nice on the ball, intelligent.

“He’s a good player and (West Ham) have got a few of them to be honest. They added some in the summer, so it’s obviously a tough test for us and one we’re looking forward to.”

  • Pundit pleads with Grealish to ‘produce magic’, admitting forward ‘needs a big’ World Cup

Pundit pleads with Grealish to ‘produce magic’, admitting forward ‘needs a big’ World Cup

Micah Richards wants Jack Grealish to “produce the magic” in the World Cup, as he feels the forward “needs a big tournament” to remind people of his quality.

A £100million transfer is enough to prompt some questions about the quality of any player. The best thing that can be done to quiet that noise is to perform to a high standard.

While Grealish has been solid at Manchester City, he has not lived up to the heights he was at during his time at Aston Villa. Richards feels he still has that in him, and a good World Cup campaign can show that to the world.

“He [Grealish] needs a big tournament and he needs to remind people of who he is. I watched some old clips of him at Aston Villa recently to remind myself what a special talent he is,” he told the Daily Mail.

Indeed, the winger was one of the Premier League’s very best while at Villa Park. In 62 Premier League games upon his return to the top flight for his boyhood club, the Englishman scored 14 goals and provided 20 assists.

That does not tell the full story of how he carried the side on his back for the majority of those two seasons. The fact that he was the most-fouled player in the league in consecutive seasons highlighted how dangerous he can be.

City clearly saw something big in him, leading them to drop the massive £100million sum.

Since being at the Etihad, Grealish has put in some good performances. He has scored seven goals and provided four assists in his time at the club so far.

However, he has not been the destructive, dangerous, attacking force that he was at Villa. His first World Cup could give him the opportunity to show that he can get back to that level.

“He needs to remember what he can do when he wants to destroy a defender and not think he’s just another player. Come on, Jack: produce the magic,” Richards added.

Not only would that benefit Grealish, but it would be a big bonus for England too. Having a player with a big point to prove doing his all to put in big performances is sure to lift the rest of the side and could help them go further in the tournament.

  • Transfer insider offers Manchester United man as outside shout for ‘signing of the season’

Transfer insider offers Manchester United man as outside shout for ‘signing of the season’

Transfer insider Dean Jones feels that Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen should be considered a “candidate for signing of the season” due to a few factors.

Eriksen was a target for a few sides after he made his return to English football with Brentford. Indeed, the Bees themselves were part of that group, as were United and many other sides.

It was the Red Devils who snared Eriksen, and the Dane has missed just one game so far.

Transfer insider Jones feels he could be the best signing anyone made during the summer transfer window.

“I think when you evaluate the value of the player compared to his performance levels, Eriksen has to be a candidate for signing of the season. He helped them move on, too, from the Frenkie de Jong saga,” he told GIVEMESPORT.

“He helped bring a style of play and experience and just a level of performance that United hadn’t been capable of before this moment. So, undoubtedly, he has to be considered one of the best signings of the year.”

Eriksen has clearly been an important asset for United this season. That is evidenced by the fact he has started in 12 out of 14 league games.

What’s more, has provided six assists and scored twice in all competitions. United had been crying out for a consistent performer in the centre of the park and he has brought that.

However, calling him the signing of the season might be overstating his impact just a little bit.

There could be a few candidates for that title in the Premier League: Erling Haaland, Sven Botman and Gabriel Jesus to name three. Haaland is the name that stands out the most, and it is hard to look past him.

In 18 games for Manchester City in all competitions, the Norwegian has scored 23 goals. Of those goals, 18 have come in 13 Premier League games, along with three assists.

His league goals tally makes him the top scorer, six goals ahead of second-placed Harry Kane. With that impact, it would be tough to argue against him as the best signing of the summer.

That is not to downplay the impact that Eriksen has had; clearly, the Dane has been a very good player this season, and the fact that he was free makes it an ever better snare for United, just not quite as good as a man who is far and away the league’s top scorer in his first season in England.

  • Ravichandran Ashwin highlights key reason behind Rahul Dravid and Co. taking a break from New Zealand tour

Ravichandran Ashwin highlights key reason behind Rahul Dravid and Co. taking a break from New Zealand tour

Team India is currently on the tour of New Zealand for three T20Is and as many ODIs under new captains and coaching staff. Regular skipper Rohit Sharma, top-order batters Virat Kohli and KL Rahul, head coach Rahul Dravid and his support staff have all been rested from this tour after the recently-concluded T20 World Cup in Australia.

In Rohit’s absence, Hardik Pandya is leading the Indian team in T20Is and Shikhar Dhawan will take over the responsibility in ODIs. VVS Laxman and his support staff of Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Sairaj Bahutule has taken over the coaching duties from Dravid and Co.

In the meantime, Ravichandran Ashwin has jumped to the defence of his coach Dravid after cricketer-turned-commentator Ravi Shastri criticized him for taking a break from the ongoing New Zealand tour.

Highlighting the physical and mental strain that Dravid and his support staff has been under since they began building up to the 2022 T20 World Cup, Ashwin said: “I will explain why Laxman has gone there with a completely different team because even that could be interpreted differently,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

“Rahul Dravid and his team put in extensive hard work ahead of the T20 World Cup – right from planning. Since I saw this from close quarters, I’m saying this.

“They had specific in-depth plans for each venue and each opposition. So they would have been under not only mental but also physical burnout, and everyone needed a break. As soon as the New Zealand series ends, we have the Bangladesh tour. That’s why we have a different coaching staff led by Laxman for this tour.”

India reached the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup after winning four out of five group matches, but got thrashed by eventual champions England in the knockout game.

Ashwin acknowledged the fact of fans being disappointed and stated that no excuse can take the feeling away. However, he urged the fans to appreciate the effort made by the Indian team to qualify for the semis.

“Everyone would have felt bad seeing Team India not win the tournament or reach the final. I agree, it would have been shattering. I don’t think any excuse will make you forget it. Definitely, it is a disappointing moment. But we all have to move on,” added Ashwin.

“We can’t call it a disappointing campaign. We lost in the semi-finals. Reaching the semi-finals and finals can be considered an achievement. But from an Indian fan’s point of view, and the expectations they have of this team, I totally understand the disappointment from the fans. But we players are at least 200-300 times more disappointed than what you all went through.”
